WASHINGTON — Sen. Charles Robb (D-Va.) on
March 4 issued a personal appeal to the chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff, urging him to push for the
reversal of the Pentagon’s longstanding ban on lesbian
and gay service members.
“From time to time, you have made the grave
tactical error of asking me to share with you my
thoughts on issues concerning national defense,” Robb

considered opening its ranks to women and blacks.
Robb’s missive, made public by a Richmond
newspaper on April 27, came in response to comments

just hope that it’s going to reach some
