WASHINGTON — Vice President A1 Gore
introduced Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-
Connecticut, as his running mate, saying that
the selection would "tear down a mighty wall
of division."
Gore was referring the fact that Lieberman
is the first Jewish candidate nominated for
national office by a major political party. The
pair appeared at a Nashville rally on Aug. 8.
"Dear Lord, maker of miracles, I thank you

Gay Democrats say party platform
shows strong support for lesbian,
gay community's primary concerns
By Dennis Vercher
As Democrats head to Los Angeles to open
their party's national convention this week,

gay causes.
Provisions designed to strengthen the
party's stance on gay and lesbian rights were
adopted by the platform committee without

"We're proud and pleased that the
Democratic party platform reflects such broad

gay and lesbian Americans," said Michael
Milliken of Dallas, a board member of the
National Stonewall Democratic Federation
and a member of the platform committee.
New provisions, unmentioned in previous
platforms, include support for hate crimes leg-

While Dr. Christine McGinn didn't fly into

was a big step toward her dream.
"It was like, 'Wow!'" she says. "You get to
go down, see the space shuttle and be a part of
the mission."
McGinn already reached two of her child-
hood goals before getting to this point. She
became a doctor as well as a pilot. These
accomplishments enabled her to become cho-
