IN A MICHIGAN FOREST
FIRE
The most exciting experience I
ever had said T E Spencer was
in a forest Hn near Manistee Mich
I had visited s Entail lumber camp
md retired to rest in one of the
bunks provided for the choppers I
was awakened by a strong light
from the north and gong outside
jt the wooden shanty it seemed to-
me that the entire world was on
fire It cracked and snapped dan-
ced and jumped as if the demon of
fire was holding a high carnival
and celebrating the end of the
woild From every side could be
heard sounds like the firing of can-
non and the ehriekB of dying human
beingp It was the falling of the
boughs and the sighing of the
wind but I nuver heard4so horrible
a sound nor witnessed so weird and
terrible a sight Hastily awakening
the other men iu the camp
I mounted a horse and fied
from the fl tines But the horse
could not keep pace with the
progress of the fir The lurid
heavens looked as though they
were at molten beat the air
was stiflingthe smoke almost snf
tbeated me while falling leaves and
boughs burned my horse and the
bickuiing odor of burning fkeh add-
ed tj the horror Within two
or ihree hours 1 was in an open
ingwhere I was nolonger in dan
gerrbnt my horse was bndly injur-
ed while my clothing was full ol
holts where embers had struck me
I wiI take my chances with cy-
clones or earthquakes bur not with
a bunnngforobt again Si L > uis
