RUSK — The narrative in
last Friday’s game between the
Rusk Eagles and Groesbeck
Goats was simple for both
teams.
For the Eagles, Rusk had to
defeat the Goats, then Mexia,
to get into the playoffs. For
Groesbeck, a win clinched the
spot for the Goats, giving them
momentum and a week of rest
heading into the playoffs, since
their bye week was scheduled
for the season’s final week.
Everything set up for a shoot-
out in Rusk — a night which
tripled as a
playoff show-
down, home-
coming and
senior night.
An excited
Eagle team hit
the turf and
ran the ball,
put points on
the board and
limited both turnovers and
penalties.
Unfortunately for Rusk, so
did Groesbeck.
Despite outgaining the Goats,
519-462, the Eagles fell to
Groesbeck, 42-29. The loss
eliminates Rusk from playoff
contention and seals the playoff
bids for District 20-3A.
Palestine will go Division I
and take on Carthage. Fairfield
and Groesbeck will go Division
II, with Fairfield meeting the
loser of this week’s Jasper-
Center game and Groesbeck
taking on the winner.
The stark advantage in total
yards for the Eagles was made
all the more stunning by the
fact that Rusk did not have any
passing yards.
All 519 yards were gained on
the ground as the matchup be-
came ashootoutbetweenRusk’s
rushing attack and Groesbeck’s
passing game.
The turning point came on
Rusk’s second possession in the
second quarter.
After holding the Goats to
a three-and-out and with the
score tied, 14-14, Groesbeck
punter Harley Jones came out
to kick. The ball hit the Rusk 35
yard line, then rolled another
33 yards and was downed at
the two.
Rusk set up for a quick run
to get out of the shadow of their
end zone, but fumbled the ball.
Groesbeck safety Lance Logan
recovered the fumble in the end
zone to give the Goats a 21-14
lead - one they would never
relinquish.
Prior to that- and afterwards,
in fact - the game set up to be a
shootout worthy of an elimina-
tion game. The Goats started
with the football and moved
down the field behind 31 yards
rushing from running back
Terell Miles.
Quarterback Colt McCoy
completed a pass to Klein Wiley,
but the Eagle defense stepped
up to pin the Goats inside the
30. Groesbeck went for the field
goal, but the kick from Nicolai
Von Heynitz was wide left.

Traye Roberts during Friday’s game. The Eagles fell to the Goats, 42-29, eliminating
Rusk from the playoff race. The Eagles close their season this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at
Mexia.
Kody Stanley started to keep
it up the middle. Groesbeck
scouted the play and chased
Stanley out to his left. Stanley
then pitched to Chaston Ben-
nett, who found himself back
around the 10, surrounded by
five Goat defenders.
Bennett stepped out of the
grasp of Logan, then cut up the
field, running away from the
Groesbeck defense for an 80-
yard touchdown that covered 90
yards of field - at least. Kicker
Chris Sanchez tacked on the
extra points and Rusk took the
lead, 7-0.
The Goats answered quickly,
fining up wide receiver Matt
Barnes in the Wildcat forma-
tion. After a 40-yard run by
Miles, Barnes ran the ball on
the next four plays, punctuat-
ing the drive with a three-yard
score. The extra point by Von
Heynitz tied the game at 7-7.
Rusk went three-and-out on
their next drive, and Groesbeck
kicked off then ensuing posses-
sion with a 49-yard pass from
McCoy to Barnes.
The Goats went back to the
Wildcat formation, with Barnes
running on five of the next nine
plays, scoring from a yard out
late in the first quarter. The
Goats took the lead, 14-7.
Rusk answered with a drive
that ate up a lot of turf. Stanley
started with a nine-yard carry,
then Bennett carried for 46
yards. David Overstreet added
a nine-yard gain to get Rusk to
the 14, then Ray Foreman cut
that in half with a seven-yard
gain. Stanley finished the drive
with a seven-yard touchdown to
tie the game at 14.
After the fumble recovery for
a touchdown for Groesbeck, nei-
ther team could sustain much
offense. Rusk advanced to the
Goat 20 on their next drive,
but a fourth down incompletion
ended their threat.
On the ensuing Goat drive,
McCoy completed five passes,
including an eight-yard gain
to Jamareus Tatum, a 23-yard
gain to Wiley and a 38-yarder
to Danny ITuckeby.
Groesbeck got down to the
Rusk two-yard-line, but Barnes
fumbled on second and goal
and Stanley came up with the
recovery for the Eagles.
Rusk tried to get into the end
zone before the half, and things
looked good when Bennett
broke away for a 56-yard gain.
The drive ended two plays later,
when a pass toward the end
zone from Stanley was inter-
cepted by Huckeby, effectively
ending the first half.
The Eagles started with the
football in the second half with
four strong runs from Stanley
and Foreman, advancing Rusk
to the Goat 24. Unfortunately,
Ruskfumbled, with Groesbeck’s
Evan Ruen recovering.
The Goats marched down the
field, with McCoy hitting both
Wiley and Barnes with 11-yard
passes, then finding Barnes for
a seven-yard pass.
However, McCoy fumbled the
