BROWNSVILLE CAMERON COUNTY TEXAS SATURDAY EVEBTITO DECEMBER 17 1892
lfARFJlRE ed throughout this seotion of the
I country calling on all libertylov
ceHt ing Mexicans to ioin in the over
throw of the Diaz government No
one can tell where they came from
Dr Hernandez a physician who
was summoned from New Laredo
Sunday to attend to the wounded
citizen who was shot on this side
of the river stated to the cor-
respondent that the battle is more
serious than at first reported He
aays the attack was made on the
night of the 10th at about 9 oclock
Captain Segnero commanding
Mexican cavalry at a point opposite
San Ygnacio was in the barracks
with hisIieutenaut and a gentle-
man visitor They were smoking
and playing cards wken the revo-
lution ists opened tire killing all
three The soldiers came out of
their quarters and were received
with a volley killing ten of them
Five soldier took refuge in the
barracks and the invaders failing to
dislodge them set fire to the build-
ing burning it to the ground and
literally roasting the soldiers alive
All of the surviving soldiers joined
forces with the ievolutionists and
all came to the American side of
the river and are camped near San
Ygnacio
Indications go to show that the
outbreak was premediatsd as the
revolutionists are fully equipped for
a desperate and long siege

There is not a nan ou the Rio
Grande border more respected as a
gentleman and friend aud admired
as an officer than Wa8l Skely slier
iff of Starr connty He knows
every foot of tin lower border coun-
try He has held his present office
for ten years or more and is grow-
ing in popularity every day He
has seen much hard service and his
numerous and extended scouting ex
peditions during the Garza trouble
during the fall and winter of 1891
92 caused him to be given thename
of Chaparral Sheriff of the Lower
Rio Grande Border It is npt gen-
erally known that SheriffSHely was
the first officer in the United State
or Mexice te learn of the so called
revolutionary movement of Catari
no Garza and his band against Mac
ico This is tho 6tory
Sheriff Shely was at his home in
Rio Grando City on the night of
September 15 1891 when a messen-
ger brought him a note which
when opened was found to read as
follows
Mr TY W ShelyC E Garza
salutes you by conduct of Ylefon
so Solis I am your friend in
Mexico
Signed C E Garz
This note was writteu in English
in Garzas own hand and the man
Solis referred to was a deputy sher-
iff whom he had captured The
note was written by Garza on the
United States bank of the Eio
Grande River on the same night
that he mnde his first erossfng into
Mexico in his fool hardy expedition
which turned out so unsuccessful
Sheriff Shely inimediateiy notified
the commanding officers of the gar-
rison in Mexico in the vincinty of
where thecroiaing was made and al-
so the federal authorities on this side
of the river He immediately took
to the ficldia search arid pursuit
of the villains and the campaign
which lasted for so many months
was formally opened Mr Shely
still hasthat note of the wily leader
who was the instigator of so uinch
trouble and it will probably come
in good play sometime as evidence
against the author iu case his cap-
ture is ever effected
