The Pony Express -- 3
Panola offers math options
By Rachel Scholl
Panola College requires
all students to take one col-
lege-level mathematics class
to complete the core curricu-
lum and earn their associate
degree. Most commonly, the
average student defaults to col-
lege algebra as it appears to be
the first college level class after
completing TSIP requirements.
However, what many students
don’t seem to realize is that col-
lege algebra is not the only op-
tion for completing the core cur-
riculum.
“If it’s [listed] in the core
curriculum... then all of those
courses fit the minimum require-
ments for the core curriculum,”
said Karon O’Neal, Chair of the
Mathematics Department. “The
courses you decide on, in the
core curriculum, depend on your
major.” The core only requires
three hours of math, but if you’re
a math major you have to take a
several math courses.
What if you are not a math
major or a science major? What
would a liberal arts major need
with college algebra?
“A liberal arts major possibly
needs only the minimum three
hours for math. The courses that
we highly recommend for liberal
arts majors are MATH 1332 or
MATH 1342. College algebra
is only recommended for heavy
math/science/engineering ma-
jors,” O’Neal said.
MATH 1332 is the contem-
porary math course. It does not
require any prerequisites and
provides a more a general study
of mathematical concepts. Sta-
tistics, MATH 1342, is likewise
recommended for business ma-
jors, nursing majors and general
studies majors.
Elementary education ma-
jors should take MATH 1350
and MATH 1351, fundamentals
of math and one other three-
hour course at Panola or upon
transfer.
On the other side of the spec-
trum, science or engineering ma-
jors with established success
in advanced high school math
courses, should take courses ap-
plicable to their major. If you need
to take calculus, then speak to a
math teacher, or speak to your
major advisor and sign up for cal-
culus.
O’Neal said, “If you are ready,
you can take calculus. Other low-
er-level math courses would be
electives.”
O’Neal encourages students
to talk to a math instructor for in-
dividual guidance about math op-
tions, and see what math require-
ments are necessary.
