"WXhen did you ever see my mother?" she flung at
me.
"At the Stanford Court Apartments, following a
little dog episode. I saw you and her get into your
luxurious limousine and sweep like queens through the
entrance arch to the street. I have danced with you
when you thought I was some green hick from the country.
Would you like to know more about yourself?"
Her dark eyes glittered. But her mood underwent
a change for the softer.
Finally we got down to business. I outlined the
proposition that had been intended for her mother. She
agreed to fulfill Joe's instructions and said she would
advise with her counsel and meet me in Los Angeles on
the following night at the Alhambra Hotel.
I reached Los Angeles Friday and conferred with
Woolwine regarding coming events.
Saturday night Miss Harrison called me on the
telephone and said she was out at the Vernon Country
Club and asked me to come there.
I refused. She then consented to come to the hotel.
I waited and a few minutes later she called me up
again; this time from the Elks Club, so she said.
She asked me to come there. I refused and again
she consented to come to my hotel.
That was the last I heard from her. Evidently her
counsel thought it best for Joe to continue to languish
in discomfort at Huntsville.
