Now York, Dec. 11.—Tho running
up of the gold engagements for ship-
ment to France tomorrow to the sunt
of $3,900,000 took the edge off the
speculation temper today. A consid-
erable unloading of stocks resulted In
the latter part of the day. The les-
son of the gold shipments was
strengthened by the preliminary esti-
mates of the week’s currency, from
which it appeared practically no gain
on balance from the interior had oc-
curred to offset the absorption of $5,-
938,000 by the sub-treasury operations
of the week. .None of the gold taken
for export has figured -yet In the sub-
treasury operations, the effect there-
fore being deferred to next week's
bank statement rather than in the
showing to tie published tomorrow af-
ternoon. The payment of subscrip-
tions to the Panama canal bonds are
not yet completed in the figures of
sub-treasury operations, leaving an-
other tnoney requirement to be met. It
Is not unusual for the temporary ac-
cumulation of funds to prepare for the
year and disbursements to make some
strain on the money market and to in-
volve the catling of loans. The ex-
panding tendency of the loan item of
tthe tiauks also continues. With the
reserve last Saturday standing at llt-
lle over $20,000,000 there was pre-
sented by this rapid summing up of
requirements, a rate of inroad upon
ihat sum which . suddenly appeared
somewhat prodigal. The feeling of
confidence that the interval to the
easy money markets of January could
be bridged without special care in re-
trenchment of outlay was somewhat
disturbed by this development and
some hasty retirement from stock
commitments followed The small ef-
fect produced on the exchange market
by the geld engagements gave an im-
pression of a still unfilled requirement,
which Indicated a likelihood of the
continuance of gold outgo. It Is sup-
posed that, besides the very heavy in-
flow from abroad of American sectiri-
tles, the higher prices lately prevail
ing, the conduct of the speculative
campaign has involved some large car-
rying of stocks in foreign markets
with money borrowed In this market.
With the approach of year end re-
quirements foreign lenders are dis-
posed, !t is believed, to reduce the ac-
commodations of tills kind. Hills are
scarce In the exchange market with
which to effect remittances and the
shipments of gold are found necessary
to meet the occasion. The amount of
shipment today was limited only by
the supply of bar gold procurable and
the assay office and foreign bankers
believed from the sustained strength
of foreign exchange that gold would
lie shipped next week to considerable
amount.
Bonds were Irregular, total sales,
par value, $(1,488,000.
United Slates bonds were un-
changed on call.
