The Community Bniider has onj
several occasions called atention to
the many advantages afforded by a
community rest room, especially in
agricultural unctions, and on this page
have been given in considerable de-
tail dsHcriptioss of the organising^
financing and Operating af typical
rest rooms. The practice, however, of
providing f,<*-h rest rooms has net
become so general as it should, for
rooms, and when sufficient pledges
very valaablc if not a very aeccatg
sary invitation wherever it has been
e.-tab'ished.
In n late number *of the ^Dallas
(Tex.) News, Walter C. Esry gives
a very interesting description of suen
a room conducted nt riulphur Springs,
in the Loue Star State, and called
the Hopkins County Free Best Boom.
This rast room owes tie origin to
the interest and activity of aixtoon
women comprising the Tanti Club,
of Sulphur Springs; for the idea
has been advanced by the civic cIud
of Sulphur Springs nothing
resulted, because that organize!
sought tc secure public funds
-uppotting tho room, and tho county
board insisted that if money was
appropriated for the purpose the room
should be fitted up to the basement
of tho court house. As this was not
deemed a suitable place the project
was dropped.
However, in Augst, last year, the
women of the Tanti Club took up
the matter by soliciting from local
business men pledges of raoajtjijfft
contributions for the support of tbo
ruomo, and when sufficient pledges
had been secured to guarantee heat,
light, rent and matron’s salary the
the rest room has proved itself a
in September. In addition to the
pledges of individuals the eity eom-
missioners also contribute of city
funds to its support and supply wuter
to the room free. I

Tho room is in a building that!
formerly was a store sad it won (
lighted and ventilated. It has been
subdivided by low partitions to salt;
the new use to which it has been
put. A hallway runs down one side;
the reception room is to front, and
next to it is tke nursery and retir-
ing room, the later being furnished
with beds for the use of women who
are tired or ill. Another room con-
tains tables and ehairs for tho coa-
•fVenlsnee of persons searing fwm a
distance and bringing their lunches
with them. A dressing room also is
provided, and the rest room is equip-
ped with toilet and lavatory facili-
ties. Electric lights have been in-
stalled and for rammer electric fans
will be put ig.
The reception room being to front is
iighl/and airy, j* appropriately ifd*
lushed with writing'tobies ns well fos
easy chairs, sad is supplied with
books, magazines, etd, Tor the uUS q»
visitors. -*
While the priniepal purpose of the
rest room in Sulphur Spring*, as we l
as in most other commiprinties, is tf
providei p. place for (women; frtgnf |hb,
country to go brus up before going
on with their shopping and also as a
place for them to wait for their hus-
bands to transact their business, yet
tho room is used for many other pur-
poses that are equally important in
their relation to the community wel-
fare.
Tho room at Sulphur Springs is util-
ised also an a Eed Cross distributing
station. A similar room at South Ha-
ven, Mich., apported by tho Board of
Trade and by ity . appropriation,
is also used not only as a Bed Cross
i I f ;V*' ’ flft L——^—

i.i9togical Society holds its regular bcncfit.-Ameri*.:
monthly mdetinga, us does the Board of
Tfade. In fant the South Haven East
Hoorn iq a eommonity meeting place
at which every sort of public gather-
ing is held.
• . . ' ’ ' ''
At the time the Hopkins county rest
room Wts being promoted tbe coun-
ty commission#™ on being asked for
an apropriation Said there was no de-
mand for each an institution and there
was no legal warrant for such an ap-
propriation. Tho sequel, howover, has
amply disproved their contention, tor
during SKe first month of the room's
operation more than twelve hundnu
women, who made use of its facilities,
registered, and many others used tho
room without registering.
Many more took advantage of the
fucitlities provided in the room during
tho second month of its operation.
Every person who has lived in a
rural community knows that the aver-
age farmer and wife who come to town
to trade cannot complete their respect-
ive business transactions at precisely
the same time, so that it commonly
happens that one or tho other, gener-
ally the wifo, is obliged to wait around
the stores where she lias done her trad-
ling, until her husband has completed
his business. Moreover, it is ukely
pleted his or her business they are at a
with their shopping and' ns a place for
loss to know whether 'tho other has,
and ut a consequence it is a kind of a
wild goose chase from one store to the
other to,find the wife, or vice versa.
When, however, the rest room is pro-
vided, the wife goes immediately there
when she has completed her trading
and tho farmer can go to the store
and get Us goods and then go direct-
ly to the rest room with tho assurance
that he Will find his wife.
As a community convenience the
rest room justifies itself in a hundred
ways.
But as a Convenience for the mer-
chants, themselves, it unquestionably
will make their contributions for its
suppoft a good investment, for, on bu-
sy days it is an inconvenience if not
a positive annoyance to be obliged to
entertain customers ’ in the store for
meny hours or even minutes after their
business has been transacted.
,It is really a measure of efficien-
cy on the pert of the merchants to
provide n common meeting place such
Oe e rest room. |
In winter, especially, tho frequent
opening of doors and tbe coming iq
and going out of scores or even hun-
dreds of persons who are merely look-
ing for somebody adds greatly to the
confusion and dirt of the store, as
