Aside from the marvelous beauty
of Niagara falls, it is a great eco-
nomic asset The descent of the
stream at the falls and in the rapids
just above would produce a water
power equal to 8,000,000 horsepow-
er. But the development of that
power would involve Jhe diversion
of the river from its channel and the
deatruction of the cataracts as s
scenic feature.
Afi^r s beginning had been made ‘
in the utilization of the power by
appropriating a part of the water,
agitation was begun by champions
of scenic beauty which resulted in a
treaty being signed by the govern-
ments of the United States and
Canada regulating the amount of
water that might be used for power
purposes.
By means of powerful grinding
machinery made posaible by the tre-
mendons force' of the falls, Niagara
played a big part in war prepara-
tions. It lengthened the lives of big
guns, multiplied the power and

Niagara was able to do without
trading materially from its beat
and without exhausting file amount |
of water allowed by the treaty.
