watched as the toys were passed through the hands
of firefighters to line the top of the firetruck. The
students personalized each bear with a special
prayer or wish.
“These two bears are getting married. They have
to stay together!” said one of the Shlenker second-
graders, as the pair was given away as a mitzvah.
The cuddly teddy bears will be distributed
among the fire department’s EMS units. They’ll be
used to comfort injured and sick children involved
in emergencies.
The first-responders thanked the students for
the special gift. The team from HFD Station 68
included senior captain Nancy Kamman, engine
operator Larry Di Camillo, and firefighters Anthony
Noto and Kevin Diehl. HFD assistant fire chief
JHV: LISA BROOKS
Noa Granoff, Ben Newman, Andrew Newman and
Donovan Shuster were among the Shlenker second-
graders who donated teddy bears to HFD.
David Almaguer was all smiles as he watched the
proceedings.
“These kids are spending their time and effort
to help other kids who they don’t even know,”
Almaguer observed. “They know they are giving
something to another child to help them through a
tough experience.”
The assistant fire chief noted that the generous
donation supplies HFD with enough teddy bears for
an entire year.
The Shlenker second-graders raised the money
for their tzedakah project by reading books and
enlisting sponsors. One student read 31 books.
This year’s read-a-thon raised enough funds
for the students to make an additional donation
to MEDILIF of Houston, an organization through
which firefighters help firefighters, in honor of
the four fallen firefighters and those injured in the
May 2013 hotel blaze in Southwest Houston. Those
tragically killed all hailed from Station 68.
As the students began to go back to class,
they all turned back to the firefighters, and
in unison, shouted: “Thank You!” □
