by the people of Cork in refusing to
give “the petty little despot” an ova-
tion, it says “Cork is the recogniz

served rebuff! The orange thugs of
Londonderry and Bellfast, gave the
“butcher Jbigot” an ovation. On the
principal that “birds] of a feather
flock together,” this is meet and
proper. The vile monsters, who,
vulture like, would devour their own
mother, found a congenial spirit in
the ihedt nation of bigotry, which was
capable of vomiting forth the Des
Moines speech, threatening the civil
and religious liberty of Catholics,
and would, like the “petty little des-
pot,” which he apes to be, in defer-
ence to Monarchial England, refuse
to receive the address of the Irish
people who commissioned Parnell
and O’Connor Power to present it to
America on their behalf, on the oc-
casion of the Centennary of Indepen-
dence. We are proud of Cork—
Rebel Cork—rebel to England but
loyal to Ireland. The brutal butcher
of the wilderness, the “cat tail strat-
egist” of Virginia, went out of his
way to insult the Irish people in the
presence of their representatives,
and when he had the effrontery to
seek an ovation at their hands, gal-
lant Cork slaps the butcher in the
face. There is no todyism about the
Cork men.”
This may not be true as regards Slates
—indeed we know it is not; but it is abso-
lutely true as regards those delicate or-
gans, the human lungs . When they are
disorganized and partly consumed, they
cannot be restored to a healthy condition.
But bear in mind that this misfortune can
never happen if Hale’s Honey of Hore-
houndai.d Tar is administered as a rem-
edy for the cough which always precedes
pulmonary consumption. Sold by drug-
gists everywhere at .SO cents and $t.

The romance which hung around
the story ol Maximilian and Carlotta
is somewhatly rudely dispelled by
“Un Essai d’Empire an Mexique,”
by M. Masseras, former editor of the
Courier des Etats Unis, who is ac-
quainted with all the facts from ac-
tual observation. lie states that
Maximilian was a pititully weak and
frivilous man ; that he was given up
to a consideration of petty details o'
etiquette and liveries ; that he hated
the affairs of state, and had a horror
of work; that he drank to excess,
was vacillating and capricious, in
short, the architect of his own ruin.
Carlotta, he shows, had lost her
mind before her husband’s trouble
began.
