Autumn Reflections.
The changes of tho season
bring to some mind a suggestion,
always, of sorrow The grasses
dry in August's withining heat,
the chill of autumn scatters the
fallling loaves, bare stubble fields
replace the sweep of golden grain,
Nature seems stripping for bur-
ial, It is easy to reason thus of
life The sweetness of child-
hood, the bloom of youth its
beauty, its atniuuding energy and
limitless ambition, pass for the
dull and wearing monotony of
maturity and the weakness of
ago. Uissafiointmont and sor-
row find voice in pesaimism.
This is tho cry of the superfi-
cial Pessimism Is tho philot-
ophy of tho Buporticial, It may
be intense, but docs not go deep-
ly enough iuto life. It is like
the hosrtbronks of childhood,
which an understanding of life
will heal. Tho flower fadeth
that the fruit may come. Biuv
Helds and empty vines tell of
liasooet gaUiaiadi rndhar
for supply of life. Ookl and
snow mark Nature's opportunity j
to renew the forces of tjie uarih,
and out of boundless resources
provide for harvest again.
We level forests, build cities,
till tho fields for what? To give
place and opportunity for a free
and honorable peoplo to grow j
up into largeness and beauty of {
life. Then what? Where does-
all that product of character,
that precious result of toil and
heartache and hope and joy, of
love and faith and self discij -Ut
line, go? Into nsthingncBaf
Or, into a sphere lilted for it?
Ask, Nature, who does nothing
oiniss or fruitlessly.

Every vote cast for the repub-
lican party is a vote that will
help tbe prohibitionists in South
Texas. The idea of men going
out of a party with two or three
hundred t housand votes,that lias
entire contiol of tbestate,hoping
to benefit a cause, in a party
with less than 100,000 votes is
preposterous. If ait the repub-
licans were anti-prohibitionists
whic h they are not, no greater
per cent of them being ir, favor
of anti-prohibition than there are
of tbe democrats, they could not
do a thing for the cause, because
the administration and the en-
tire legislature will have a large
democratic working majority.

There are many movements on
foot for tbe betterment of Wash-
ington county, but none of them
ere more promising than tbe
fact that real estate agents are
getting a lot of land listed, and
options on stdl other lots, with a
view to bringing new settlers
here. With a few hundred good
good farmers from other states
in the coonty, a new system of
farming would perhaps he inau-
gurated, and everybody knows
that a new system is needed.
Much of the land of Washington
county neels fertilising, yet very
little is being used in tbe county.
Smaller farms and more -inten-
sive cultivation is also needed, - —
and with a few pioneers in this ?*" *c/
line others would fall fat line and hltD M
tbe entire oonaty would be bene-
fited.
