Smith New
Face On Staff
The beginning of a semester brings
many new faces to the. student body and
the faculty staff. Panola is no exception.
To this we can add Edd Smith.
Smith is the new Student Activity
Director, filling the vacancy of Buster
Miller.
Smith’s duties include Intramurals,
Student Council, and charge of the dorms.
Coming to Panola, Smith has ten years
teaching experience, nine of those years
were spent here at Carthage teaching
fifth, eight, and ninth grade. “A lot of kiefs
I taught I see out here everyday. There’s
not a Carthage student out here that I
didn’t teach.”
Originally from Levelland, West Texas,
Smith taught in San Antonio for a year,
before moving to Carthage.
Smith has two Masters. One in Reading
and the other in Administration Super-
vision.
“Taught a class out here last fall, I
enjoyed it more after working with the
kids. That’s what made me take the job.”
“I can see that student council having
more input into the college life. What we
have, we work hard at, but we could have
better.”
“It was a real big decision to take this
job, and lose the security that I had
acquired at Carthage High.
When asked if he had any plans on
moving to another college, or moving up
at Panola, he replied, “I don’t intend to
move from Carthage. Butyea, I would like
to advance, right now no. This job is a six
or seven year job. I can’t see me moving
up till about seven or eight years. Maybe
not even then.

PJC Pair Selected In Dra
Edd Smith
A pair of Panola Junior College hard-
ballers are making news in a time when
basketball is the center of sports attention.
Ronnie Gideon, a graduate of Hallsville
High School, and Cy Phillips, a product of
Clear Creek High School both got word on
Tuesday that they had been selected by
major league teams in the 1983 baseball
draft.
Gideon, a first baseman-pitcher for
Panola, was drafted in the second round by
the Pittsburg Pirates, while Phillips was
selected during the 11th round by the Mon-
treal Expos.
Both men received word Tuesday con-
cerning their selection by the two major
league teams in the regular phase of the
inter draft.

Grant Deadline Is Near
There is still a chance for grant money
in this school year but time is running out,
says Wanda Gaines, financial aid officer
for the college.
Gaines says that students have until
March 15 to make application for a Pell
Grant. After that, it will be too late for this
year.
Students may still receive aid for the
time period from January through the end
of summer school.
Gaines says that as of her last progress
report, which was completed in
November, her office had paid out nearly
$45,000 in grants to Panola students.
“We will pay out approximately the
same amount this semester,” says
Gaines. She added that there are also 22
new people who will receive grants this
semester.
She explained that she hopes to award
about $110,000 in grants at Panola this
school year.
What about aid for next year?
Gaines says that her office has received
no word on grant amounts or cut-off
figures for aid for the next school year.
“I suppose that we will remain very
much like we were this year.”
“I plan to start a program that should
help present students plan for the coming
year,” added Gaines.
The last of February, I will hold two
seminars or workshops to assist students
in completing aid forms for the coming
year
“I was in class at the time an
(Wilson) took a message and
number for me to call back,” said
baseman-outfielder Phillips.
“When I called back and was
couldn’t believe it. This is the si
dream that I have always had,”
Phillips.
“It was really a surprise to me
did not think I would be picked
winter draft,” said Phillips, “I ji
the Lord and my parents for the op
ty.”
Gideon echoed Phillips’ wordsj
“I was very excited. This (plaj
ball) was something that I havewf
do ever since I was young.”

semester.
