Forestry program to begin here in fall
A course in forestry will
be offered at Panola begin-
ning in September of this
year, according to William
H. Gullette, Dean of Occu-
pational Education.
The course, which will
run for 11 months, was set
up by the college in con-
junction with the Advisory
Committee of representa-
tives irom local forest
industries, including the
Texas Forest Service,
International Paper and
Georgia Pacific.
"This course is designed
to provide the student with
workable skills to meet the
needs of the forest industry
at the technical level. It
will be the only program in
the state using this format, "
says Gullette.
The course, which will be
seven hours a day on the
block time schedule, will
consist of one-third class-

Topics covered will in-
clude fire control forest
surveying and protection,
dendrology, reforestation,
and wildlife ecology.
Also personnel manage-
ment, business methods,
and office machines will
be considered briefly.
Guilete says the course,
which speeds up the learn-
ing process by providing,,
theory and practical ex-
perience, is estimated to
cost the student about $200
for the 11 months. About
$8000 has been tentatively
budgeted for new equip-
ment, according to Gul-
lette. Those taking the
course, which will be
housed in the Vo-Tech
Building, will receive a
certificate on completion.
