To-dat the great fiesta at Paso del
None commences, audit is well-known
that those bunco-men that have so far
escaped the clutches of the law on this
side, nre making tremendous prt parti-
tions to fleece «jh1 rob all unsuspecting
visitors who may chantie that *vhv. Ap-
parently these people are under the im-
p-esMOU that thej aie as <afe fr^Hi inter-
ference by justice as they ever have been
heretofore, but they niiy re. kon without
their host. Not to speak of the late mu-
nicipal election of a gen^iennn of ad-
vanced and progressive idea^, and one
who will nut k'lO'ivi'tigl.v tolerate \vi bin
his bailiwick aiiy such nifirl u« transac-
tions as Have up to now constantly t»"ken
place in our sister i ir<, we desire in nd-
uition to p itit io the fact that the leading
federal official there, Senor Santos de )a
Gaiza y Gutierrez, is determined that
the former wholesale iobi ery (fuusu*-.
peeling vi itors shall be stopped. As the
itnmedia e reiiivsentat.ve of the \5< xi. an
federal government in Chihuahua he has
made up his mlml that the I.uncos in
Paso del None i^hall go. His endeavors
in that dht";ion wall be«fllct ntly sec-
onded 1 j' the new iminie pal authorities,
and we may s.ifely test ns-ured that ttiis
foul blot on Paso del Norte's escutcheon
—buinoinn—will shortly be forever
eraled.
portitionsf Indeed, on this polutwebav®
the testimony t.f P,. sideut Cleveland.
Vt\» believe our tariff laws and regula-
liong c.ipiil le of immense Improvement,
but, w ith all r« i e> to the United States,
we may say that Mexico is not likely lo
take example fr >>u that e< u i ry in effect*
iug changes in its «a• ift" laws."
We learn Irnu a pnwite - ' rve tha
the pelai t anil untiring endeavors of
the Times in insisting on dnyl ght arriv-
als of passenger trains on the railroads
centering here will shortly be crowned
with ti e success whi< h perseverance and
t ersis eneyalwaj sdeser.es. We learn thi.t
at an early day the passenger trains at the
depot of Ei I a •• will a live and d part in
dry ti w\ Tni> may se>m a small thing
to out-i lets, but to tin seconversant with
our affairs it w ill be plain t at it is to us
a matter of considerable magnitude and
imp.'itame.' People heretofore had no
chance to look al the Rio Grande valley
or at the city of El Pa=o unless iheyjstop-
ped < ff here and to >k a whole day for It,
and many people who were on the look-
out tor favorable places of Invefttnent,
had neither time or inclination to da so.
Hundreds of investor have pasSel by us
and gone on to S< uthern California,
which is not a whit mme aitraciive, sim-
ply because they could not tret a daylight
glimp»e of our fertile and beautiful yalley.
Our people arc a'd right, they are of the
pr<>p r stamp, but her-ti fore they have
been somewhat heavily h-mdifcapped by
adverse i irciimstaiices. Give us halt a
clmiee and we w ill show the world what
can be done by a thriving, industrious
and inn-Hit; n* connnuiiitv.
El Paso isjusteuteringon its big boom.
It is preparing to enter in grand st\le on
its iace towards metropolitan greatness
and importance. Its people are fuliy
alive to the occasion, and its commercial
community particularly arc equal to the
demands of the times. The Times will
not be found laggirjt: behind. A recent
slight change in the proprietorship-
slight in itself, but important in the im-
provement and enlargement it has made
po gible—has enabled us to make ar-
rangements that will keep us in the lead
and make the Times equal in value to
any paper in Texas. \\ e have purchased
new material that will aggregate in value
420,000, and with other improvements
contemplated in the make-up and the con-
tents of the paper we feel jusiifled in
claiming that in a very short time the
Times will be fill y abreast with the
times. This paper came when the town
first came; It has stuck it out through
thick and thin, through flush and. dull
times, and it proposes to be hereafter, as
in times past, the representative and
exponent of all that is solid, subs'antial
and prog es ive in lair El Paso. For a
month or two past the Times has been
unable to give its readers the daily dis-
patrhes, on account of the peremptoiy
refusal of the Associated Press to let
them go to El Paso, but we have ar-
rangements on foot to obtain them again
at an early day—earlier tliau tliey could
be obtained by any other source.
