Scratch 110 More.
The symptoms of itching piles are mois-
ture, like perspiration, intense itching, most
at night, seems as if pin worms were crawl-
ing in or about the rectum. The more you
scratch the worse they itch; very4distress-
ing. The private parts are often affected.
I)r. Swayne's Ointment is the most effec-
tive remedy extant for this tormenting com-
plaint. Gives rest at night without that de-
sire to scratch. Also has no equal in quick-
ly eradicating tetter, itch, sail rheum, ery-
sipelas, barber's itch, pimples, all scaly,
crusty, itchy skin eruptions. Here is the
proof: "Certainly the best remedy ever

brought to a balance with two

New Orleans Times.
Wriggles had some teeth
pulled lately and took cold in
his jaw, which swelled until it
looked like a ripe watermelon.
He poulticed it, bandaged it, all
to no purpose, and walked the
floor several nights with it,
quoting extracts from Bob
Ingersoll's lectures, but all to
no purpose; it kept on swelling
Yesterday morning he re-
marked to his wife that he'd
give fifty dollars to anyone
that would hit him a tremen-
dous thump'on it suddenly with-
out his expecting it, to see if it
wouldn't burst the swelling.
The dear woman smiling to her-
self, went and gathered a boot
jack, and stepping up quietly
behind the old man as he was
trying to strain some coffee
through his teeth, lovingly in-
quired: "Where does it pain
you most, Wrig?" "Oh, Lord,
right here, right here," replied
he as he turned his jaw up and
pointed to the apex of the pro-
tuberance. Taking a step back,
the dear woman raised the boot-
jack on high and hit him a reg-
ular bungstarter right in the
center of the calamity, and
smilingly stepped back to wait
for results. The old man's
knees flew to his chin as he
shut up like a patent rat-trap,
and with a hollow groan he
reeled off the chair on the floor.
But he was up in a moment, and
as he danced the can-can, with
original variations, his wife
similingly asked: "Did it re-
lieve you dear?" And he tried
to howl out an answer, old Mrs.
Pry, who had just dropped in,
beat a hasty retreat. And now
the whole neighborhood has it
that Wriggles has got 'em
again. And as Mrs. Pry re-
marked; "That 'ere comet will
be the death of some of these
old bald heads yet, settin' up to
watch it."
Consemtire Platform.
The following is a synopsis of
the platform adopted by the
state democratic conservative
convention of Virginia, on the
5th inst:
It insists on the preservation
of public faith at both state and
national conventions, and de-
nounces repudiation in what-
ever form. It recognizes the
lawful records, and proposes
that the democratic conserva-
tive party shall continue its ef-
forts to unify the public debt
of the state, and will endeavor
by amicable arrangement with
her creditors, to secure a reduc-
tion of the rates of interest con-
formable to the general decline
of rates of interest on public
securities. It congratulates the
people that recent assessments
of property exhibit an increase
in values, so that no increase of
rate in taxation will be requir-
ed, and therefore, opposes any
increase in such rates, It in-
sists upon the capitation tax as
a perquisite for voting, and for
the maintenance of the public
school system .founded by the
conservative party. It de-
nounces as monstrous the at-
tempt to pack the supreme
court of the state in order to
secure particular decisions.
Lastly, it declares that the
elections in Virginia have been
fair and free, that they were
hostile to the state, but that it
was reserved for recreant sons
of Virginia to publish this libel
upon her fair frame."

London Truth: It may not,
perhaps.be known that a man
wearing dark clothes is more
liable to infection from contag-
ious disease than he who - wears
light colored garments, becausc
particles which emanate from
diseased or decaying bodies are
much more readily absorbed by
dark than by light fabrics. This
is easy of proof. Expose a light
and dark coat to the fumes of
tobacco for five minutes and it
will be found that the dark one
smells stronger than the other
of tobacco smoke, and it will re-
tain the odor longer.
A Prison Tragedy.
Louisville, July 24.—A spe-
cial to the Courier Journal
from Paducah, Ky., safl! An
exciting tragedy occurred here
to-day. Eleven convicted pris-
oners in. the county jail were to
have started at 8 o'clock this
morning to the penitentiary.
Between 6 and 7 o'clock there
was a noise in one of the cells,
which attracted attention out-
side, quickly bringing the war-
den and his assistant, Jackson,
and the county judge, to the
scene. Two negroes, Levi
Boldon and John Stewart, con-
fined for larefeny, were confined
together, andI reaching their
cell the officers fqtond that Bol-
don had killed Stewart,, having
beaten out his brainstvith a
piece of an iron bunk. As
soon as the cell door was open-
ed Boldon attacked the officers
with his weapon and would
have killed one of them but for
their pistols, which firing al-
most together, sent #ne ball
through his body and another
through his brain. The cor-
oner's jury rendered a verdict
in accordance with the above
facts, and the dead were buried
this afternoon in the county
cemetery. The sheriff proceed-
ed to Frankfort with the re-
maining nine prisoners. The
general feeling among all class-
es, white and black, is that the
shooting was justifiable, self-
defense, and strictly in the line
of the officer's duty. Every-
thing is quiet, and there is no
excitement.
Then.
Harper's Magazine for Aug-
ust, has among its many attrac-
tions, a paper called "Then,"
written by James T. Fields, dur-
ing his last illness. The rem-
iniscences are general .lather
than individual, and such as
will bring to the mind of his
contempories many a scene of
thirty years ago. The paper
closes: "Then the summer
mornings were full of singing
birds, always waiting outside
our windows to help us begin
the day with happiness. Then
the flowers were born as if to
accompany the birds in their
benevolent visions. Then all
our dreams were pleasant imag-
inings—Arabian Nights' Enter-
tainments, frolic's mission of
untroubled joy. Then June
was the longest and loveliest
month in the calender. Then
we were depressed by bad
weather. Then headaches had
no lodgment nearer than our
neighbor's brain. Then per-
sonal rheumatism was unknown.
Then insomnia had not been in-
vented and we were not obliged
to draw on apothecaries for
vials of sleep. Then all was
gold that glittered. Then we
were young."

Some Married Women.
Osceola Sentinel.
Only a short time ago, while
we sat in an Osceola store, we
saw a man and his wife from
the country at the counter trad-
ing. The woman had appearance
of being a hardworking, indus-
trious, intelligent lady. She
was examining a piece of calico
or other cheap dress goods.
The clerk said, "shall I cut you
off ten yards?" The pale-faced,
over-worked women turned to
her husband and in a timid,
frightened manner she asked
her husband if she might buy
the dress, as she needed it,
and the cost would be less than
a dollar. "No, he grunted, "I
can't afford it," and yet he had
just paid for a great plug of
navy and a paper or two of
smoking tobacco. The poor,
illy-clad, but neat woman sub-
sided as though this was no ex-
perience, while her rough,
coarse and animal husband bit
of a mouthful of the weed and
ordered her to get ready and
go home.
Often before we have wit-
nessed similar sccnes, and we
can never, therefore, entertain
any feeling of admiration for
such a man.
