t Commodore Moore. We have leuriied with
much satisfaction, that the President has expressed
a determination to restore this gallant 'and highly
meritorious officer to a rank in the U. S. navy, sim-
ilar to that he held in the navy of Texas. We be-
believe, if the voice of the people of Texas could be
heard, it would be found cordially approving the fol-
lowing resolutions that were adopted unanimously
in the two houses of the Legislature, at the last ses-
sion. The previous resolutions of Congress, and
of the Convention, recommending this gallant offi.
cerlothe favorable consider.! lion of the General
Government, hae been approved in all sections of
the republic. A tew political spaniels acting pro-
bably, under an erroneous opinion that their idol
wished to persecute this officer even without cause,
have endeavored to create the impression that he
was a defaulter to the government. This base charge
was made at a period when he could not procuie
his vouchers at Austin to prove his innocence; but
since they have been procured and examined by the
proper officer, it has been asceriained and admitted
by this officer, that the accounts of the Commodore
are correct, and show that a balance is still due him
from the goven ment. It is to be hoped that this
fact will henceforth silence the slanders of his ene-
mies, and induceohe-candid-and- impartial to exert
their influence in sustaining him in a station, where
his services may reflect credit upon himself, and be
useful to his country. There is, we believe, no of-
ficer in the American service, who is so well acquain-
ted with the Gulf coast of Mexico, as Commodore
Aloors. He has examined in person every harbor,
cove and inlet from Boca Chica to Sisal, has sound-
ed the depths of water on all the principal bars and
shoals, and has even ascpnded several of the princi-
pal rivers, as far as they are navigable. As his pa
triotism and integrity are above reproach, and his
nautical skill is unquestioned, the President at this
juncture, would cei tainly be but performing a duty,
to place this officer in a command where he could
render the most important services to the republic.
Resolved, bv the Senate of the State of Texas, that they
respectfully recommend to the favorable consideration of
the U S gov't, the officers of the late Texas navv, who
have gallantly dr fended the interests and flag of the repub-
lic, on the gulf of Mexico, and request that they may be re-
tained and provided for in the navn senice thereof.
SENATE CHAMBER,

force of the republic, as well as all the accounts for mon-
ies receivrd by him from the government of Texas and

The correspondent of the Coin-iscrcial Times,
writing from Washington, says ''many of the Sena-
tors have sigued a paper recommending the Hon.
Aeexander Barrcw, for the appointment of Brt-gadier-Geueral
in the Army, in case the bill for the
increase of the number of officers in the service of
the United States, should recoinea law."
The U.S. Gazette in reference to the same sub-
ject says:
"We understand that the nomination of Alexan
der Btrrow, as a Brigadier-Gmeral in the Army,
will be continued by the Senate of tho U. States, al-
most unanimously, Mr. Calhoun, and one other
Senator, voting in the negative, and this not from
any dislike to the nomine'e, but from a determina-
tion io make some point against the administration."
We have made some iuquiry to ascertain what
services Senator Barrow has rendered in a military
capacity, to entitle him to this office, but we can ob-
tain no testimony in his favor. We understand that
even in Louisiana, where'he is best known, the in-
quiry has often been made, "in what military ser-
vice has he been distinguished?" Mr. Calhoun will
have a belter reason for voting against his appoint-
ment than 'to make some point against the adminis-
tration;" for if there were no other reason, the prece-
dent that Congress may create an office, the appoint-
ment to which is to b'e given to one of its own mem-
bers, is sufficiently dangerous to civil liberty to justify
any patriot in voting agniust the appointment.
The steamship Great Britain, arrived in New
Ifork onllie 28th tilt, with Liverpool dates to the
?9fh ulL The news of the passage of the resolu-
tions in Congress for the notice had been received
and had allayed the war panic (hat had previouslv
prevailed. The public sentiment in England is
decidedly pacific. Wilmer &wSmith's European
Times of the 9th says:
" Yesterday, the important intelligence came to
hand, that the Senate, aftei nine weeks discussion,
had come to a division on the Oregon notice. The
subject is too comprehensive in its features, too preg-
nant in its consequences, as regards the peace of the
world, not to excite the most marked attention; and,
accordingly, the daily papers have "leaders" on it
in which the present and future bearings of this new
move are clearlv and graphically pointed out. The
notice is not viewed in a belligerent spirit; and it
will not be the fault of the people on this side of tho
water, if it should subsequently paitake of that jaun-
diced ingredient. One of the blessngs of a free
press is, that every great public question is argutd
and put in so many shape?, that the popular mind is
imperceptibly led to appreciate its merits, and made
acquainted with all its difficulties. Public opinion
is thus ripe when the time for action has arrived;
and no statesman can calculate upon that support,
which is as necessary to his official existence as the
air is to his corporeal vitality, without basing his
measures on a just and comprehensive policy.
Viewed in this light, Mr. Polk'a allusion in his inau-
gural address to the Oregon, will do good. The
manner in which he took up the question, directed
the attention not only of the two governments most
immediately interested, but of the whole world to its
importance; and some progtess has been already
made, and is making, towards a pacific solution.
Six months ago fears of a rupture with the Uni-
ted States uere general. Now they have disappear-
ed. Not the least commotion was visi )Ie yesterday,
when it became known that the Senate had passed
the resolution for giving the notice, and, as we have
intimated in another column, it had no effect on the
cotton, or any other market.

Houston, June, 25th, 1846.
Dr. Moore
Sir: There has been much said about the improvement
of ioads leading to and from ibis place, and the construc-
tion of turnpikes, &c. Now I think it is time the people
of Houston shall lake this mutter in hand. A little
public spirit will at this lime go far towards advancing tho
object. All feel an interest in this matter. Perhaps it
might be useful to the end in view to assemble the citizens
and discuss the matter, and resolve upon some course to
be pursued. A very small sum from the owners of real
estate and mm of business, will set the ball in motion, and
once started it will not stop until good roads are construc-
ted to the various parts which the wants of the country
planters point out. To commence this work sir, if you
notify through your paper that a meeting will be held nt
the court house on Thrusday, 2d of July, al night, 1 will
address the people as to the propriety of engaging in this
work now. The city of -Houston, possessed of superior
natural advantages should not neglect the removal of such
obstacles as manifestly lend to its injury al times..
Yours &c.
