THE undersigned rcspecifully inform thf public, that, with
the commencement of ihcapproachingsesiuuot i ongre,
they will begin thf publication otthe "Congreional Union"
and ''Appendix." The first will contain a-full and accurule
history of tne daily proceedings ol boihbianches of the nation-
al legislature, li will be compiled with such care, that every
citizen who ib interested in the public a 13 airs will find it a com-
plete synopsis- of their piocefdings, and a ready book of refer-
ence upon all questions which come before them.
The second, (the "Appendix,") will contain very .-peech
which i- delivered in the House of Representatives and fcenate,
duriug ihese.siun, rep irted ai length by a full and able corps
of cviigrtSMonal reporters and revi-ed beiore publicatii a by
the auiboiti, whenever it is requesied. '1 hese two works will
be strictly nnj artial, .md sire intended to be as in rrest'ng and
uselul to the man of business, and to the politician ol the one
pan, as oi .he other.
It may be Maid, without exaggeration, that the next session
of Congress is deymtd to be one of the most important which
lias taken place since the foundation ol the govtrnment. Ilrs
ti e long session. It is Jhe session which w ill develope the ge-
neral pi in ot the present admiui.-tration. lis measures will
stamp the -baracier i lour institutions for yea: s to tome. Some
of the most important questions which are connected with our
foreign relations, or our domestic concern, will be pr&erMed
for their o-m-ideiation The final measuie of ratifying thp
constitution ol Texas, which is to consummate her admission
into ouj Union, and ihe admission of her members into our
public councils every measure which affects ihe Oregon
question our relations with Mexico as well as the final de-
cision on ihe revived Zol -Verem treaty, these, and other
nieaMues which are more or less connected ith our foreign
relations, will ome under the review ol Ihe approaching Con-
gress. ASo&t of the eminently imporiai.t quisiion which re
late to our imernJ oiicerns the revision of the Tariff the
adoption of lite best mode lor preserving the public moneys a
variety pi commercial incisures pprnaps the best s"slem lor
regulating the impor'ant interest of Texas the Indian ques-
tions the land question the best system for our navy, thee
and others will con tituie a ma:-s of u.-iness which is cab ula-
ted to command much ot lite inneof Corrgress.and much ofthe
attention of thepeople. They will all be reported by ihe "Con-
gifesional Union." '
The Daily, Seinj-Weekly,and Weekly Union, will as usual,
embrace anititerestmir variety ot matter on political, scientific
and literary subjocis, along with thecurrem news of the day.
Tne editors ill continue to devote all his energie to the im-
povenieni ol "The Union." He finds nicMiy accomplished
men in this city. The administration has btought wi h it a
considerable m cession ol talei.is. Several tried and distin-
guished members of the democratic party haw aicepttd office
under it. Some ofihem have liberally con'ributid iheir lite-
rary 1 bors toour bem-fit ; and we hope lo enlist others in our
service. Besides, the time is not lar disiant when the editor
intends lo call othei talenikJ to his assistance. His ambition is
to make his paper worthy ol the metropolis of the Union. He
is persuaded that, with the facilities which his position enable
him to en ploy: with the official and other materials placed
within his reach; and with the aid ofthe correspondence whi;h
ne ii attempting to establish in loreign countries, a paper may
be ntiblished. which is not nnworthv olthcsunnort ol'hiscoun-
try In undertaking the task, he knew he had many difliuil-
ti s to overcome, many lesson1 to learn, many sacrifices toen-
counter. He knew that, amid the arduous cares of a new the-
atre, he could not at first do jusn'ce even to himself; but his
zeil has never flagged. What enthusiasm and indtatiy can
effect, will be fully accomplished. Some errors he may have
aire', dy commuted. But upon one point, he can speak with
great pleasure and wiih tqual fieedom. The men who are
adminisieiiiig tlii government are woikiog men, anxious, as
he believes, to do their duty, to s rve their 'ountry, lo carry
ou- the pledges under winch the Piesideul was elected, and the
grat principlesol thepany. So long at the admiuislra'ion is
conducted in ihisspint, and upon those principles, he is prepa-
red loto-onerate with lhem in the public service ; and to give
th m, as he promised in his prospectus, "a fair, liberal, and
efficient. -uppoit." .s
We leel a deep tense of gratitude for the prompt manner in
which our political Iriends, in every section of ihe country
h.ive already come forward t sustain the "Union " May we
not hope that our Iriends throughout the United Stages will con-
tinue to assist our lobor, .md pievail upon their Iriends to take

TO TEACHERS.
J TST published, a revised and greatly improved edition of the
Sequel to
Webster's Elementary Spelling Book,
Or a Speller and Vffir.tr ;
Containing a selection of about 12,000 of ihe most useful words in
the English Language, wiih their definitions ; intended to be used
as a-spelling Boole and a Dictionary. By William G. Webster, so n
ofthe late Noah Webster, LL. D.
The object of this Dcfiner is to present to the scholar a selecdon
of such words, and their definition, as are in general use, and such
as are met with in school Heading Books. The other words gene
rally found in school dictionaries, are omitted as of little benefit in e.
common school education, and only tending to lumber up the mmd
at a great expense of time. -
School dictionaries usually contain about thirty thousand words.
A child that is compelled to learn ami recite the meaning of every
word, as it is alphabetically arrantiedj will be likely tojretain after
all, only such words, and iheir definitions, as are found in the read-
ing lcsson3 for schools, and such as are used .n ordinary conversa-
tion. Hence the advantage claimed for this selection which we
now offer to th nnurp nf thnfin ihfi cause of education.
It is so arranged, that it may be used both as a Spelling Book
and as a Dictionary. It is the opinion ot many intelligent leacuers,
who have acquainted themselves with theplan of this book, that it
only needs to be generally known, to be universally adopted, as an
indispensable work to follow the Spelling Book and Dictionary.
