.CAPT. IIIGHSA ITU'S KHrOUT,
Of his Expedition for the c.vplotaliun of a Rovtc to
Presidio del Rio Grande and Pcxto del Korlc.
San A n ton 10, Dec. 15 1SJS.
Col. P. Haxsbuougii Bell. Com'd'jr Frontier.
Sir: Pursuant to your older, dated 22d August.
1S4S, in referencn to a survey nud examination of a
route from San Antonio to El Paso and the Piesidio
of the Rio Grande, on the 5ih of Sept. last, I marched
from the Llano Station with 35 men of my command,
with 2d Lieut. Williams to a-sist me, Dr. Baiton as
surgeon, and my interpreter, John Conner.
Under the general direction of Col. J. C. Hays, who
had been designated to conduct" the expedition1, 1 pro
ceeded with him to the head of the Llano ; thence to
, the Nueces river, and d.nvn it to a point below an old
abandoned Mission ; thence, across to the head spiing
of the Las Moras, a tributary of the Rio Giande.
From this point we proceeded "in a north-westward di-
rection, crossing scwral other tributaries of the Kio
Grande. Here we encoantoied an exceedingly nig-
ged and dry country, which caused great inconve-
nience to my men, and great injury to their horses.
Un the 26th of Sept.. we reached Pecos river, amidst
rough mountains ; and after having been one day and
a half without watffr. an Indian trail was here found
bv which we were enabled to nroceed in the proper lOssS
direction being, however, greatly embarrassed by
high mountains; and after touching the Rio Grande
at threp different points by Indian trails, we finally, on
the 15th of October, crossed to the west side of the
Rio Grande, through a very large and much used trail.
At that period, and for many days previous, we had
exhausted all our provisions our only food consisting
of mustangs and our pack mules.
The long and rough route over which we had
passed, and the difficulties encountered, had caused
unexpected delay, and the time specified in your order
Avas now about to expire; but having command of
tne escort ot me party, l tnougnt it would not ue in- gg
consistent with your instructions and wishes, that I
should proceed ; and indeed it was necessary, as any
other movement would have involved the safety of all.
I accordingly moved forward with all possible haste,
to the nearest inhabited place.
On the ISth of October. T reached San Carlos,
where we procured food, after being entirely without
any, except mule meat, muscal root5', and such preca-
rious subsistence as we could find, for fifteen days.
On the 22d of October, we re-crossed the llio
Grande, 35 miles above, opposite the town of Presidio
del Norte, and encamped one mile from Fort Leaton.
Our distressed situation was explained, and a full and
satisfactory apology made to the Mexican authorities
for having entered the Mexican territory with an
armed, force, and we were well received.
"We remained nine days at Fort Leaton. where we
procured the necessary supply of provisions, and ani-
mals for our return.
On the 3lst of October, we took up the line of
march for the home trip, and reached the Pecos river
on the 10th of November, passing over a very good
country for a road. Apprehending that we hadstrnck
too high up, we descended the Pecos 75 miles. Here
we changed our course in a direction E. N. E., and at
, the distance of 60 miles, arrived at the head branches
of Devil's river. At this point, on the 25th of Novem-
ber, Col. Hays deemed it best that 1 should proceed to
ray company station, whilst he. with a parly of thirteen,
vould move in a more southwardly direction, towards
San Antonio. "We according! v parted companv. Mv
course was E. N. E., and on the second day 1 arrived
.at the Concho river, and descended the same about 20
x miles. Thence, my course was a little south of past,'
over a beautiful country, well timbered, and abundant
in water striking the head of Brady's Creek, and
down if, in the same direction, to the San Saba river,
over a fine country, to my station, which I reached on
the 11th of December.
I had found it necessary to leave the greater part of
ray command on Brady's Creek, about 75 miles from
the Llano Station, in consequence of very severe
weather. My man were badly supplied with shoes,
their animals exhausted, and supplies short. I hasten-
ed to my camp, and immediately sent back to them the
requisite supplies and an additional number of animals,
to afford them a more comfortable passage to camp. -
Notwithstanding the greatest care and attention had
been given orrthe whole trip -to our horses, the seve-
rity of the weather, long and continued marches, and
want of food, deprived my men of the larger and most
valuable portion. They perished mostly by exhaust-
ion from want tjf proper food some few were stolen
by the Indians.
In conclusion, I would observe, that from the ob-
servations made by me on this expedition, it is my
opinion lhat a first rate road can be established on or
very near the same route which we traversed on our
return from Paso del Norte, with the necessary requi-
sites of wood, water, and grass, over a fine and level
country, unobstructed by mountains or any natural
opposing difficulties.
The distance, by lhe head of the Concho, from San
Antonio to Presidio del Norte, does not exceed five
iiuudrcd miles.
That portion of your order which required that "each
member of the military escort should conduct himself
in a manner creditable as a soldier, and like a gentle-
man; and that the service should, in every respect,
be well performed," has. I am gratified to state, been
-complied with, my men having discharged their duties
in a prompt and satisfactory manner.
I am sir. with the highest respect,
Your obed't servant.
S. 1IIGIISMITH.
