nishes the following leaf in the history of
Aaron Burr, which will now be read with
interest :
"Every information that can he obtained
in regard to Mexico, at the present tim ,
is desirable, and anxiously sought for and
published. The department of Stale at
Washington, if the files Jire examined, are
in possession of a great deal of information
in regard to Mexico, which might be use-
ful at this time.
Under the impression that, in conse
quence of the rapid and constant changes
of clerks, and officers in the department
which have taken place, the present clerks
may nor know of the existence of the pa-
pers towh;ch I tefer, I beg leave to refresh
their memories, by stating the following
circumstances:
After ihq arraignment, trial and acqnitai
of Col. Burr, it is well known that gentle-
man went to France that long prior to
his going, he had very assiduously search-
ed for smd obtained all kinds of T forma
tioii that was deemed useful or necessary
to a successful invasion of Mexico, which
he had long contemplated.
These papprs and documents he took
with him to France. Whilst at Paris, Col.
Burr requested an in erview with Bona
parti, proposing nn invasion of Mexico,
and offeringto take a command in the pro
posed expedition. Bonaparte declined a
personal interview, but throug?i the Secre
tnryjif War, Col. Burr was inform, d that
the Emperor would r cefve any written
communication he was disposed to make.
After some dehhei niton, and a delay of
three months. Col. B. sent in a propos Hon,
accompanied by a voluminous memoir de
tailing all the advantages to he derived by
an invasion nf Mexico. This irieumir
