thoe foreign ves'els which by treatv or act of Congress are
permitted to enter on the paymeut of the domestic duty an
additional duty of five per cent.
Towage From and afterihe nineteenth day of May, one thou-
sand eight hundred and fortv-two, there shall be laid on all
vessels which may enter any port of the Republic from any
foreign pi rt or place, a tonnage duty of sixty cents per ton,
on merchant vessels, and thiny cents on steamboats, accord-
ing to register tonnage.
g-Promissory Notes and Government Bonds are not receiv-
- ed for duties on goodc imported after the 1st of February, 1842.

tP (XR the lO.h inst., the extensive Cotton Ware Houses enn-
''J -neued with the Cotton Piess, will be ready to receive Cot-
ton for compressing or storage or both, as the owner may wish
The ware houses win h aie being built, are capable of safely
storing 20,000 bales of Cotton. -
The Cotton Press will be in fnll operation by the first of Feb-
rnary, and will compress 200rbales a day, and reduce the size
4 about one half.
The owners and charterers of vessels w ill gain ovr 70 per
cent , by having their CoUon compressed, as a eisel will carry
nearly double the quantity.
Planters andshippeis of Cotton can forward their Cotton con-
signed to the Cotton Press. The agent will be m readme-s to
receive and deliyer all consignments, and attend to shipping
when iequesled,without the attendance of ihe ow ner
Draysand laborers areattached to the Prei, who will always
attend lo keeping the bales clean and in good order, and mend
them when necessary. The charges will be the same they are
