Learn the basics of an archaeological dig
Digology program to be held Saturday
Have an adventure learning about
archaeological digs on Saturday, Jan.

free event, and with the variety of jobs
to choose from, even those who can't
do strenuous labor can participate.
Jobs will include digging, sifting,
recording, measuring, dusting and
more.
Digology will be the fifth "ology"
program presented by the City of Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment.
The session will start at 9 a.m. in the
Pollock Center, 129 S. Alister St.
Pam Wheat-Stranahan will give an
hour talk about how an archaeological
dig is performed.
Wheat-Stranahan is the executive
director of the Texas Archeological
Society (TAS). She has served the
TAS as chair of the Education Com-
mittee, editor of the newsletter and as
president. She is on the Advisory Board
for the Museum of the Coastal Bend in
Victoria. Wheat-Stranahan also serves
as a trustee of the Aransas County
Historical Society and on the Aransas
County Historical Society.
Wheat-Stranahan's interest in in-
terpretive archaeology began when

historical exhibits. Her contributions to
archaeology education include a travel-
ing exhibit, "Archeology in Texas"; a
teacher's manual with Brenda Whorton,
"Clues from the Past"; a video produc-
tion, "Evidence of the Past"; numerous
articles; and most recently "La Salle in
Texas: A Teacher's Guide to the Age of
Exploration and Colonization".
Wheat-Stranahan specialized in
archaeological topics while pursuing
a career in education. She taught in an
intermediate school for fifteen years,
serving as curriculum writer, chair
of the social studies department and
principal. She also taught history at
San Jacinto College. Before becoming
executive director for TAS, Wheat-
Stranahan was director of education
at the Houston Museum of Natural
Science. She also was education co-
ordinator for the La Salle Shipwreck
Project with Texas Historical Com-
mission and director of education at
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center,

The digology program was designed
to teach the basics of an archaeologi-

Charlie's Pasture, analyze and record
that data and, of course, have a lot of
fun, said Rachael King, assistant direc-
tor of the parks department.
Participants should wear clothes

as most of the day will be spent out
of doors. Bring a lunch, snacks and

drive to the site. The ground around
the area is fairly flat and comprised of
soft sand/clay.

In the little chapel
Leading a tour group, Austin artist Patrick Cobb points out a feature of his artwork on the walls of the
Carter family chapel off Avenue B in Port Aransas on Saturday, Jan. 19. Cobb volunteered nearly a
quarter century ago to paint pictures on the chapel's walls to express his religious feelings. The tour
was conducted in conjunction with the Art Center for the Islands.
Mission work topic of next

missions at the next scheduled Brown
Bag Lecture Series, then about full-
time RVing at the following lecture.
The meetings begin at noon on
Wednesdays at the Pollock Center, 129
S. Alister St.
Community members are invited to
bring a lunch to munch as the knowl-
edge is dispensed.

Formerly Midwesterners, the Strick-
ers first came to Port Aransas in
1995. Both are Presbyterian elders.
He currently serves on the session at

Women.
Experienced in the construction
trades, they have participated in mis-
sion work in Mexico and New Or-
leans.
In January 2008, the Strickers visited
a Presbyterian church and grade school
in Belize. The couple will share stories,
experiences, photos and more relating
to mission work on homes, churches,
schools as well as the people they have
met on their journeys.
Ann and J.D. Hodges will speak on
full-time RVing on Feb. 6.
The couple is originally from Vir-
ginia, but has been residents of Texas
for more than four years. They winter
in Port Aransas, then travel around the
country for the rest of the year. When
the weather starts to get cool, they start
to move south.
The Hodges are members of The
Good Sam Club and travel to many of
the State Samborees. They have given
full-time seminars at a number of the

end of February.
They are held from 2 to 4 p.m. at

State Samborees.
They have experienced many things
people question about full time RVing
and are glad to have the opportunity to
pass some of this information along to
other fellow RVers.
The seminar includes tips on getting
mail, money and medicines, places to
stay, ways to earn money and how to
enjoy life on the road full time.
Ann Hodges line dances and teaches
line dancing at State Samborees and
fills in at the Pollock Center when
needed. J.D. enjoys golfing and selling
on eBay. He says he is better at selling
on eBay than playing golf, which his
golfing partners readily concur.
The couple participates heavily in
pot Lucks and eating out, especially at
Dairy Queen. "Wow those Blizzards
are good," they said.
