Cotton Burned.— \ bout eight | furciiasi
o'clock yesterday morning quite umvw witi^any pakti^
a stir was created by the alarm
ot fire. Everybody ran toward*
the depot where a number of
balea ot cotton loaded on a fiat
car were burning at, a lively
rate. The Hook a id Ladder
Company was promptly on hand.
With thejjassistance of a few by-
standers the cotton was dumped
off on the side of the switch-
not, however, until every bale
was on fire. The car was not
materially injured. A freight
eugine that was at the depot
backed down to where the cot-
ton waa burning and the water
in her tank was used to partially
extinguish the flames. A sup-
plemental alarm of fire was giv-
en aftor the II. and L. boys
had left. They again returned
to the scene of action and uuc-
cooded in extinguishing the
burning bales so that they coilld
be londod on drays and hauled
to "Hog" Branch, about three
hundred yards distant and
(lumped into the water. There
were 37 bales ou tho car* all ot
which was more or less damaged,
though none of it was totally
destroyed. The lire, as is usual
in such cases, was caused byyft
spark from a locomotive. The
