■ Research Professor takes
office as Interim Vice
President for Institu-
tional Advancement
OFFICE OF MEDIA
RELATIONS
Tarleton President Dr. F. Domi-
nic Dottavio, announced Aug. 28
thai Dr. Koy Floyd will return to
serve as Interim Vice President for
Institutional Advancement and
will serve in that capacity until a
national search is conducted and a
replacement is hired. Floyd previ-
ously held that position for 15 years
before assuming an academic ap-
pointment as Research Professor
In Tarleton's Department of Educa-
tional Leadership and Policy Stud-
ies Doctoral Program.
"Being new to Tarleton, I am
very fortunate to have Dr. Floyd re-
join the leadership team/' said Dot-
tavio. "His breadth of experience in
donor, media and alumni relations
combined with his understanding
of the history and traditions at Tar-
leton are remarkable assets. We have
met several times and it is clear that
he will bring a high level of energy
and enthusiasm to our institutional
advancement activities."
Floyd became the university's
first Vice President for Institutional
Advancement in 1992. As principal
author and director of Tarleton's
Culture of Excellence Capital Cam-
paign, he was responsible for orga-
nizing, coordinating and managing
all activities of the campaign. The
$40 million, six-year campaign was
completed with more than $42.9
million raised. In April 2000, the

Popping the top on the national
drinking age discussion
BY ASHLEY FUQUAY

So far 100 college presidents have signed
on with the Amethyst Initiative, a controversial
group discussing the law for the drinking age,
and, according to Dr. Dominic Dottavio and
Dr. Wanda Mercer, Tarleton might be next.
"It is one of those things that we need to
think seriously about and when you have 100
other universities, very well respected uni-
versities, that have looked at it seriously, it is
certainly something that we too need to look
at," said Dottavio. "What does it mean and
whether or not it makes sense for us to sign
that agreement at this point and time, we have
not made a decision on that."
Included in the 100 universities are well-
known schools such as Dartmouth, Duke and
Ohio State University, from where President
Dottavio is a graduate. A list of all of the schools
can be found on the Amethyst Initative's Web
site.
"One of the things that we certainly experi-
enced when I was at Ohio State was excessive
celebration around some of the football events
and because of that there was a very, very se-
rious look at how alcohol was contributing to
some of the excessive celebration the we saw
in the destruction of property and a variety of
other things," Dottavio said. "I'm new enough
to Tarleton that I can tell you that I really don't
know what the culture is, what it has been here
and what kind of issues that we have."
For experience with Tarleton students, Dot-
tavio sought the opinion of Vice President of
Student Activities Dr. Wanda Mercer
"I have actually started a conversation with
Dr. Mercer around the Amethyst Initiative and
she is in fact in the process of looking at it and
is going to be providing some recommenda-
tions on whether or not it makes sense for Tar-
leton to consider it," he said.
Mercer said she was in favor of Tarleton
taking a good hard look into it.
"I have been in higher education 35 years.
I was around when the drinking age was low-
ered the last time in the early eighties," Mercer
said. "From my perspective, I think it is a wor-
thy dialogue."
In this dialogue all sides of the argument
are forceful. Mothers Against Drunk Driving
has argued against the Initiative, saying that
lowering the drinking age would cause more
alcohol related car crashes while other groups
such as Choose Responsibility, the group that
started the initiative think lowering the drink-
ing age will also lower the amount of binge
drinking among college students.
"This is one of those extraordinarily com-
plicated issues because I know the research
that has been conducted on this. Some peo-
ple would argue very, very forcefully that 21
is from a behavioral standpoint and from a
physiological standpoint... is right and there
are very complicated background issues," Dot-
tavio said. "People will argue that 21 is a much
better age than 18, but on the other side of
the equation people will say that because it is
tempting that people will try to do things that
they should not be doing just because it is a
cultural phenomenon and therefore we should
not have that as a temptation."
Dr. Mercer showed concern for student
safety.
"If you hear me talk about alcohol, you
are going to hear me talk about drinking and
driving and binging... Whether you are 18 or
80, I encourage you to think not twice but 10
times before getting behind the wheel of a car,"
she said. "I don't want my life endangered, I
don't want my family's lives endangered and I
certainly don't want our students' lives endan-
gered because they choose to drink alcohol and
get behind the wheel a one ton machine. It is
the university's duty to teach responsibility."

With Micah Moore's res-
ignation from the position
of Texan Rider this summer
you might have noticed a
new face of the field and on
the horse. Lacey Hutson was
seen performing her duties at
the first football game.
"Texan Rider was the best
thing I have done at Tarleton,
however, it's the most con-
suming thing I have ever done
at Tarleton as well and it's a
very big time commitment. I
only went home Thanksgiv-
ing and Christmas," Moore
said, "I loved it but family is a
big priority for me and Texan
Rider took away a lot of time
with family." He said that this
was the reason he resigned.
Although sad to leave the
position, Moore said he was
excited about his successor.
"I think Lacey is going to
be great. She is very excited
and enthusiastic and she is
going to bring a lot of fresh
ideas. She will continue to
make our mascot an icon for
Tarleton," Moore said.
One of those ideas is to
bring back the horse to the
Texan Rider image.
"One thing I have already
done is bring my horse down.
I can't ride him on the field,
but I can ride him at the tail-
gate," Hutson said.
Hutson is a sophomore
agricultural economics major
from Peaster, Texas.
She has already begun
