12000 AccidentFree Hours
Logged by Tom McCurdy
Local Airport Mgf
Moves to Oklahoma
Hemphill county lost a first
class flying Instructor arid an
efficient and capable airport
operator last week when Jom
L McCurdy moved his family
to ia ranch near Tahlequah
Okla
Mr McCurdy came to Cana-
dian from Hobart Okla in
August of 1945 to take over the
management of the local air-
port Since that time in addi-
tion to his regular work at vthe
airport and his crop spraying
and dusting activities he lias
taught around two hundred
students to fly a number of
whom kept on until they got
their private licenses
Mr McCurdy has logged
more than 12000 accident
free hours more air time
than many an airline pilot
During his stay here he not
only Inspired his students to
greater efforts by his supoib
demonstrations of flying tech-
nique but Instilled In them a
confidence and love of the air
that will never leave them
He stressed safety at all times
and Insisted that his students
become proficient In the some-
times difficult task of recover
lng from stalls and spins a
lifesaving maneuver not always
thoroughly developed in students
with less patient and conscien-
tious Instructors This Is one of
the reasons the Hemphill county
airport has a safety record
equaled by few in tho country
Certainly one we should all be
proud of
Few among Mr McCurdys
former students will ever for-
get the first time they saw
him take a plane up throw
Into a rapidly revolving tall
spin recover cut his ignition
switch and then make a
deadstlck landing on one
wheel and roll in that precar-
ious position right up to the
hanger dooil
None of them will ever forget
the first time Tom stepped out
and they gave it the gun and
took off for their flrst time alone
in the air The engine didnt
sound right the wind seemed to
have risen and the runway
seemed to have shrunk to
alarmingly small proportions
Some of them would have given
their good right arms for the
sound of McCurdys calm voice
about that time
None of them thought they
were ready for their flrst solo
but none of them backed out
And when they landed alone
for the first time sometimes
