Should We Be
Informed Citizens
Your city commission believes
that we as citizens should be
properly informed and that If
local municipal home rule
governments are to be preserved
and made to adequately func
tion for the best interests of the
municipalities and their citl
zens then our citizens should
not longer ignore their obliga
tions and responsibilities to
their own local citizens but
should of their own volition in
form themselves of these obli
gations and responsibilities of
the
individual
Our citizenship should in
form themselves as regards all
ordinances and regulatory
measures as are upon our ordi-
nance records that they
may
know whether or not any ordi-
nance is void on the ground that
it is arbitrary and discrimina
tory and in
violation of con-
stitutional protection enjoyed by
all
citizens
Your city commission does
not subscribe themselves to re-
cent criticism wherein it is al
leged that Our SecondClass
Citizens Deserve Action and
Apology it being stated such
action and apology should be-
rated by such people from the
city commission In this con
nection let It be plainly said
and understood that your city
commission does not foster in-
stigate promote or sponsor class
legislation or class differences
among our citizens Your city
commission recognizes only one
people one class and that the
entire citizenship of Canadian
Nor does your city commission
foster group against It
group
stands ready and willing to co
operate with all civic bodies
groups and organizations for
the betterment of Canadian
Just fair and informed criticism
IS Invited by your city com
TOlssIon to the end that civic
problems may be met properly
and advisedly
It Is common knowledge that
portions of the City of Canadian
do not have adequate water
sewer and light facilities some
portions none at all But the in
formed citizen also knows that
we have not grown In a day
Years have gone by and it will
be remembered that the Central
Park Addition to the City of
Canadian did not have sewer
service until Sewer Extension
Bonds were voted by the people
Just a few years back And
HERRING RITES
HELD THURS
Funeral services were held here
Thursday afternoon at the First
Baptist church for Don Herring
26 who was fatally injured in the
Equity grain elevator explosion
at Perryton Monday afternoon
He was born at Elkhart Kans
In 1924 but was reared in Cana-
dian
Mr Honing is survived by his
wife two daughters Sonja Lee
and Barbara Carol three sons
Ronald Kay Gary Don and
Daniel Dean his parents Mr
and Airs Manuel Herring his
grandmother Mrs Sarah Herring
four sisters Mrs Ola Hick and
Mrs Dorothy Echering of Cali
fornia Mrs Maxinc Barnes of
Oklahoma and Mrs Thelma
Daniels of Nebraska nnd by two
brothers Bob of California and
Dewey of Scott Field 111
The proposed Brannon farm
plan will be discussed Tuesday
In a program broadcast over
KFDA Amarlllo Speaking for
the affirmative will be two
prominent members of the Far
mers Union For the negative
Posle Cunningham of Dimmltt
and R V Converse of Spear
man
The Rev and Mrs J O Quat
tlebaum of Dalhart visited
here Tuesday with their daugh
ter Mr3 Dale Nix and family
To Mr and Mrs Babel
daughter born here Sunday at
the hospital
along with such extension sew-
er service was made acccssablc
to other portions of the city at
the same time
It will be noted that this
sewer extension was made pos-
sible not by recourse to the
courts or by court action but
it was done by the people them
selves and not by your city
commission And it was done
as the law prescribes by peti-
tion to your city commission
for the calling of an election to
vote bonds for such purpose as
was the following
The Original Sewer Bonds
The Original Water Bonds
Main Kingman Street Pav
ingLight
Light Plant Purchase Bonds
City Hall Bonds
Water Extension Bonds
Sewer Extension Bonds
iPaving Extension Bonds
Park Rodeo Grounds Bonds
failed
It can well be seen that
should further extension be de
sired by any portion of the city
then your city commission
stands ready and willing to call
election for such purpose upon
the proper presentation of peti-
tion that funds may be pro
vided for such extension
Your city commission does not
have funds for Sewer Water or
Light extensions at this time
but desires the people to know
that surveys were made at the
time of recent extensions on
all parts of the city and was
informed by the engineer em
ployed at that time that suffi
cient funds were not provided
by bonds to extend sewer sys
tem to all parts of the city and
extensions were made to serve
the most people with the least
cost within the funds ca pro-
vided at recommended by the
engineer
It is regrettable that portions
of our city do not enjoy all facll
Hies as may be enjoyed by other
portions of the city but your
city commission as a body
politic make no apologies but
rather as citizens call attention
to our own responsibilities and
obligations to each other to in
form ourselves as to the needs
of Canadian to the end that
those needs may be fairly
Justly equitably and tolerantly
accomplished
