The Texans opened the 2009-10 football
season against the University of Arkansas at
Monti cello Thursday at Memorial Stadium.
The Texans entered the game with senior
running back Roderick Smith ranked as the
Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by the
Lone Star Conference. Smith proved he earned
the honor scoring four times in the first half
as the Texans pounded the Boll Weevils 45-16.
Tarleton has gone 8-2 in home openers since
the 2000 season.
The Boll Weevils entered the season led
by Preseason All-American quarterback Scott
Buisson, but he could never get the offense on
track against the Texan defense.
The Texans scored first after stopping
the Boll Weevil's first drive of the game. The
Texans moved the ball 72 yards on four plays
which was capped by a 32-yard touchdown
run by Smith to put the Texans up 7-0.
The Texans extended their lead to 14-0 fol-
lowing a seven play, 65-yard drive that ended
in a 13-yard touchdown run, Smith's second of
the night.
With 9:20 left in the second quarter the
Boll Weevil's made their first score of the game
with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Buisson
to wide receiver Spencer Garrison to make the
score 14-7
Tarleton quarterback Scott Grantham hit
wide receiver Devin Guinn with a 49-yard
reception that led to a Smith 10-yard rushing
touchdown. The drive was three plays for 60
yards putting the Texans up 21-7 with 4:39 left
in the first half.
The Boll Weevils got two yards on the
next drive before being forced to punt the ball,
leading to the Texans starting the drive on the
50-yard line.
Boll Weevils running back Evan Roberts
ran the ball on second down but was forced to
fumble by UAM's Vincent Jackson before be-
ing tackled. Texan Jahmeel Hobson recovered
the ball and ran it to the two-yard-line before
being forced out of bounds. With 1:49 left in
the half, Smith scored his fourth touchdown
of the game, tying the school record for rush-
ing touchdowns in one game and extending
the team lead to 28-7.
The Texans offense took the field to start
the second half with Grantham finding wide
receiver Lester Hundley for a 47-yard touch-
down pass on the first play of the half, helping
the Texan lead grow to 35-7.
The Texans following drive went 29 yards
on eight plays and was capped by a five yard
touchdown pass from Grantham to Hundley

Crews have completed
the demolition of Crockett
Hall and Summit Apartments
to make way for a new 300-
bed student housing com-
plex, which will be similar in
style to Centennial.
The $13.8 million resi-
dence hall will increase the
on-campus occupancy rate by
adding "118 beds and is sched-
uled to be completed by fall
2010.
Crockett Hall was built in
1967. The structure was a co-
ed building that housed 182
students, mainly freshmen
and Residential Living and
Learning college participants.
The 42-year-old building had
several problems, including
roof and boiler issues. It also
consumed more energy than
the other housing facilities on
campus. "It was too expen-
sive to repair and maintain,"
said Rusty Jergins, Associate
Vice President of Student Life
and Dean of Students.

University campuses riot covered in new cell phone law
By ASHLEY FUQUAY
Online Editor
After two mass E-mails from the Tarleton
Police Department, Police Chief Justin Wil-
liams says that Tarleton does not meet re-
quirements to enforce the new cell phone ban
while driving through school zones.
"As for the signs, higher education facili-
ties do not qualify as a school zone per stat-
ute," he said. "Therefore, the school zone vio-
lation enhancements can't be enforced."
According to Texas Transportation Law
540.302, the roads through higher education
facilities are not considered school zones.
(13) "School crossing zone" means a reduced-
speed zone designated on a street by a local au-
thority to facilitate safe crossing of the street by
children going to or leaving a public or private el-
ementary or secondary school during the time the
reduced speed limit applies,
(14) "School crosswalk" means a crosswalk
designated on a street by a local authority to fa-
cilitate safe crossing of the street by children go-
ing to or leaving a public or private elementary or
secondary school.
School zone signs will be taken down
around campus in the near future, but this is
not a new law. It was written in 1995.
"I guess whoever put the signs up wasn't
aware of that law and are now taking them
down," said Stephen ville City Council Mem-
ber Russ McDanel.
Williams was not available for comment
at the time of the removal.
