Fightin' the fat,
feeling good
Iar let on Family,
With about a month of school
under our ever-expanding belts,
we turn our focus to student fit-
ness.
The "Freshmen Fifteen" has
long been a plague of the new
college student, but is not limited
to just underclassmen. It has even
been amended to the "Freshmen
Fifty" with some folks
having extra trouble
making the adjustment to
the college atmosphere.
Whether it's hitting the
drive thru too much, ex-
cessive drinking or late-
night snacking, no one is
immune to adding some
extra poundage. Howev-
er, the situation is not hopeless,
there are many opportunities
for students to stay in shape and
keep off the dreaded extra.
First and foremost,
the Tarleton campus is a
relatively compact one
and easily navigated by
foot. So, start small by
walking to class as much
as possible. Not only
does this provide good
aerobic activity, it helps
to define the calves and
glutes. Plus, you save
your body the stress of trying to
find a parking spot on campus.
If strolling to class doesn't
keep you in peak condition,
visit the new recreational sports
center. The center offers a wide
variety of free weights, weight
equipment, cardio machines, a
rock-climbing wall and basket-
ball and racquetball courts. The
center is open seven days a week
and all you need to access it is
your Texan Card. The plethora
of machines may look ominous
at first, but give them a try and
you'll be an expert in no time
The former J.T. Walk has been
upgraded to this year's J.T. Well-
JOANNA
HENSLEY
ness Program. This new version
encompasses exercise, nutrition
and personal health in general.
This could provide positive rein-
forcement for the habitual couch
potato because it involves teams
of Texans working and learning
together to motivate each other
to attain life-long fitness goals.
More information about the pro-
gram and links to wellness Web
sites can be found from
the Tarleton home
page.
We know that en-
closed exercise is not
for everybody. If that's
the case for you, take
advantage of Optomist
Jaycee Park on Harbin
Dr. or the Stephenville
City Park, located on S. Graham
St. Optimist Jaycee Park offers a
.7-mile loop around the perim-
eter of the park. Jaycee also has
a basketball court and
plenty of grassy areas
for pick-up football
games. On the other
hand the city park is
great for soccer, softball
and baseball games. It
too has a walking path
wound through it.
It's not easy when
your metabolism goes
90 to nothing and your eating
habits go south but at least now
you have a place to start. Not all
resolutions have to be made at
the beginning of the year, make
one now to take better care of
your body and establish an exer-
cise regimen that you can keep up
with for the rest of the semester.
Just remember, livin' isn't
easy, when everything you eat
is greasy. Cheesy...we know, but
your body's not going to take care
of itself. So get up, get moving.
We'll see you at the gym,

Corrections and Clarifications
In the story titled "Pop the top for toys for tots" in the Sept. 18 edi-
tion it was reported that the Plowboys collected 200,000 Coke points.
The group has actually collected 20,000 points.
