Use of Word American
Began Early in History
There are several reasons why the
inhabitants of the United States
have practically appropriated the
name American to the exclusion
of other nations on the North and
South American continents The
process of appropriation was uncon-
scious and began early in our his-
tory notes a writer in the Indianap-
olis News Evcn before the Devolu-
tion when Europeans used the term
American they generally referred
to the English colonists Patrick
Henry said In tl c Continental con
gress
I am not a Virginian but nn
American We were the firht in-
dependent nation In the Western
Jlsphcre and there was no other
nation to protest Our size and com-
mercial importance made It easy to
appropriate the name to ourselves
and usage In nearly all parts of
the world has confirmed it although
itvafew counties notably Spain it
isretlll custortiary when speaking of
Americans to destgnate whether the
flrftcrm applies to North or South

Tl e jifllclal name of this country
Is TliPUnitcd Slates of America
ard it is the only name of a country
inslthc New World containing the
word America TThe first part of
the name does not lend itself read-
ily to a modified form as a name
foi the inhabitants corresponding
to Canadian Mexican Peruvian
Italian Spaniard or German Any
such noun bared on or formed from
United States would be awkward
It was natural therefore for the
people of the United States to apply
to themselves a name already fa-
miliar one forrned from the last
word in the name of their country
In like manner the citizens of the
United States of Brazil call them-
selves Brazilians and the citizens of
the United States of Venezuela call
themselves Venezuelans

until 1377 and was nol regularly
used until after the year 1500 The
