The Litera Club of Higgins (1934-1973)The Junior Magazine Club of Higgins was organized
February 19, 1934, at the home of Mrs. C. H.
Hyde with the membership of eighteen. The first
officers of the Junior club were: President, Mrs.
Franklin Peugh, Vice-President, Mrs. Roy Sansing;
Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. Paul Trenfield; Mrs. C.
H. Hyde was sponsor from the Magazine Club who
organized the Junior Club. The charter members
were Mesdames Ira Boone, Claude Carmichael,
Frank Cheatham, Wesley Collins, Charles Darnell,
Jesse Davis, Lewis Davis, Jack Iron, Lee Maltsberger,
Franklin Peugh, Paul Trenfield, Boone Tyson,
LeRoy McAdoo, Roy Sansing, I. E. Walker, Ray
Carmichael, Walter Word, and Joe Williamson.
The first meeting of the club was held February
25, 1934, in the home of Mrs. Paul Trenfield with
Mrs. Joe Williamson co-hostess.
The club motto is "We Learn to do by Doing,"
the club colors, orchid and white, and the club
flower, Sweetpea. The club Federated in 1943. In
1939 the name of the club was changed to The Litera
Club as the club could no longer be a junior
club.
In 1937 the club sponsored a public library. On
April 9, 1947 the Higgins Library was completely
destroyed by the tornado which wiped out the townof Higgins. The library was re-opened in 1948 in a
room at the City Hall. In 1973 the club still sponsors
this library. We receive 200 books every six
months from the Mary E. Bivins Library of Amarillo
as an area loan.
To support our library we have had silver teas,
bake sales, bazaars, pancake suppers, chili suppers,
art exhibits, etc. We are now getting help from the
county. This is the only public library in Lipscomb
County. The Higgins Public Library is now in a
room of the new City Hall especially built for them.
The club members at this time are Mesdames
Elby Crites, J. L. Dixon, Oscar Peterson, Franklin
Peugh, Ode Price, William Schultz, D. W. Stobaugh,
W. C. Sullivan, Boone Tyson, Ora Vauter,
Joe Williamson, Jake Wilhite, Veri D. Litchfield,
and A. B. Davis. Mrs. Wilhite is now president and
Mrs. Stobaugh Vice-president.
The Litera Club has contributed to the cultural
and spiritual growth of the community in many
ways. Mrs. Roy Sansing and Mrs. Lee Maltsberger
are honorary members. Mrs. Boone Tyson is a Life
member of the Federation.
