HISTORY OF CAMP WOLTERS, TEXAS
Camp Wolters was activated during World War II as an Infantry Reception
Center. New Army recruits received their basic training here before being
sent overseas as replacements. Wolters was one of the largest training centers
in operation, and as many as 50,000 troops were stationed here at one
time. The Post operated full swing until December 1945 when it was no longer
needed and was inactivated.
Camp Wolters was purchased from the War Department after the war by a
local group of business men which became known as Camp Wolters Enterprise,
Inc. This corporation supervised the sale of buildings from the camp to
individuals and organizations. Many of the barracks were moved and served
as barns, warehouses, school buildings, and homes. Those remaining at the
camp were converted into a thriving industrial center.
Camp Wolters was reactivated in February 1951 to house the newlyformed
Aviation Engineer Force which was established in April 1951 with the
first contingent of Aviation Engineer Trainees arriving in May of the year.
The Post was redesignated as "Wolters Air Force Base" at this time~
During the period of May 1951 until March 1956, these SCARWAF (Special
Category Army with the Air Force) personnel were trained to insure the
maintenance of the highest possible level of operational readiness. Personnel
trained here during this time were sent to bases ranging from the Arctic
to the Tropics.
On 1 July' 1956 Wolters Air Force Base was redesignated as "Camp Wolters"
and returned to control of the United States Army. Its future mission will
include the conduct of Arnr Primary Pilot Flying School (Helicopter).
