The Hereford college closed its doors with the close of school in 191 1
with D. A. Shirley as its last president. Mr. Shirley came to Hereford High
School as principal in September, 1911, and went to West Texas State
College to teach in 1913.
The college building stood vacant until 1915 when it was purchased
by the Hereford school board and used as a high school until the new
building, now Stanton Learning Center, was build in 1926.
Hereford first became an independent school district, by vote of the
people, at an election held February 12, 1908, when 119 voted for
"corporation" and 18 voted for "No Corporation". The district, as set up at
that time, was five miles square with the town section of Hereford in the
exact center. Seven trustees were also elected at this time: R. H. Norton, W.
B. Beach, George W. Irwin, Jr., J. E. Garrison, J. L. Fuqua, D, W. Hawkins
and R. N. Mounts. This school district was abolished by an act of the Texas
Legislature on March 16, 1909, and by the same act a new Hereford

election was ordered and held on June 19, 1909, with "111 voting FOR and
33 voting AGAINST". Bonds were issued August 1, 1909, due in forty
years at five per cent, and the bonds were optional after twenty years. This
was the district's first bond issue.
Ben Short was serving as superintendent when the new brick building
was opened. This building was hailed as the "Magnificent New High School
Building in Hereford". School opened in the new building in September,
1910, with fifteen teachers and 548 students. Eight classrooms were added
to this building in 1935-36, and the gymnasium-auditorium was constructed
in 1948.
Chapel was conducted on the top floor of the building and '*room
programs" alternated with inspirational talks by local preachers who had
chapel duty in rotation, broken only by the appearance of revivalists "in
season". The hometown preachers were predictable but sometimes the
visiting pulpiteers added a touch of variety. In any case, the audience
