REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TEACHER
EDUCATION PROGRAM
ADMISSION:
Formal application to the Teacher Education Program should be made prior
to the completion of the sophomore year.
The Teacher Education Council evaluates each application. A minimum grade
point average of 2.25 is recommended for admission to the Teacher Education
Program.
ADVISEMENT:
An adviser in the School of Education is assigned to students desiring a Bachelors
Degree in Elementary Education, Secondary Education and Health, Physical
Education and Recreation.
Students selecting the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Music Education
degree or the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in art, business or
physical education will be advised regarding certification requirements by the
Dean of Education. Non-majors will be advised by the faculty in their departmental
teaching field.
STUDENT TEACHING:
During the junior year a student applies formally for admission to student teaching.
The application is subject to the approval of the Teacher Education Council
and the Dean of Education.
Approval for Student Teaching requires:
* An over-all grade point average of 2.25 and/or approval of the Teacher
Education Council
* An approved course load while in student teaching.
TEACHER CERTIFICATION
Each teacher employed in the public schools of Texas is required by law to
hold a valid Texas Teachers Certificate for the grade level, specialization area or
position to which he is assigned. Certificates are issued by the TEXAS
EDUCATION AGENCY upon recommendation of the institution that applicants
have completed an approved Teacher Education program.
Approved programs at the bachelor's level will lead to the Elementary Provisional
Certificate, the Secondary Provisional Certificate, or the All-Level Provisional
Certificate. These certificates are issued for life.
ADDITIONAL TEACHER CERTIFICATION
Students seeking Teacher Certification in addition to certificates already
granted should check with the Dean of the School of Education.Education
