A study of the materials and methods used in training Intermediate, Youth and
Adult choirs with emphasis placed on the care of the adolescent voice, organization
and rehearsal procedures, vocal techniques and repertoire. Fall odd years.

MUSIC 3354. HYMNOLOGY.
A study of the development of hymnology and the gospel song from Biblical
times to contemporary hymnody, considering the hymn as literature, the musical
value of the tune, and the relation of hymnodic development to the parallel periods
in the history of Music. Offered on demand.
Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor. Three semester hours
MUSIC 4291. SERVICE PLAYING.
A study of the practical problems of the church organist: hymn playing, accompanying,
transposition, sight reading, modulation, extemporization, and conducting
from the console. Offered on demand.

A brief examination of the historical backgrounds of Church Music and the
development and administration of the Music Ministry in the local church. Spring

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
MUSIC 1090 WORKSHOP IN ' MUSICAL THEATRE (No Credit)
Saturday workshops in creative dramatics and musical theatre performance
designed and conducted for elementary, junior and senior high students. Weekly.
Fall, spring.
Prerequisite: None. Audit only
MUSIC 1190 WORKSHOP IN MUSICAL THEATRE (Credit)
Saturday workshop in musical theatre, stody and performance designed and
conducted for high school seniors who wish to enroll for college credit. This
workshop may also be taken by regularly enrolled college students who wish
experience in working with younger singing actors. Weekly. Fall, spring.
Prerequisite: None. One semester hour cr.
MUSIC 3374. -CONDUCTING I.
Hand and baton techniques developed in laboratory experience. Group and
individual practice is supervised with drills in rhythmic patterns, tempo markings,
phrasing and dynamics. Fall.
Prerequisite: Music 1223. Three semester hours
MUSIC 3384. MUSIC METHODS IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES.
Five aspects of teaching in grades: (1) creating, (2) listening, (3) playing, (4) reading,
and (5) singing. Three class hours plus one hour laboratory. Fall, spring,
summer.
