JOURNALISM 403. (Formerly 205.) NEWSPAPER MANAGEMENT.
Attention will be given to methods of surveying newspaper fields;
analysis of newspaper revenues and expenditures; personnel problems;
plant equipment; and circulation problems.
DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH
SPEECH 101. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SPEECH. This course is designed
to establish good speech habits through instruction in development
and care of the speaking voice, articulation drills, and
application of this instruction to each individual's needs. Exercises
for developing better communication through vocal and bodily
control will be given.
SPEECH 102. ESSENTIALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING. A beginning
course in public speaking dealing with the composition and delivery
of the extemporaneous speech. The purpose is to develop
the ability to handle with some ease and competence the usual
demands for speaking which confront the educated person. Specific
types of speeches are prepared and delivered.
SPEECH 201. VOICE AND DICTION. Voice production and control,
vocabulary building, pronunciation, studies in phonetics,
and the structure and use of the speech mechanism will be studied
in this course.
SPEECH 202. (Formerly 206.) ARGUMENTATION AND DEBATE.
A study of the principles of argumentation-analysis, evidence,
reasoning, fallacies, and briefing, with applications in public
speaking and debate.
SPEECH 301. INTRODUCTION TO THE DRAMA. A general survey
of the fields of the theatre, including dramatic structure of plays
and theatre history, will be made. Basic laboratory exercises in
acting will also be included.
SPEECH 302. INTRODUCTION TO THE THEATRE. It is the purpose
of this course to introduce the student to theatrical design and
the technical problems in the production of a play. Scene construction,
stage lighting, make-up, costuming, and basic problems
in directing will be studied.
SPEECH 303. (Formerly 203) ORAL INTERPRETATION. The objective
of this course is to develop adequate responsiveness to the_ __ ___._
