of living comparable to that cf town people POR THE HUST TIME
IN HISTORY There have been ether eras when town and city people
prospered just as they arc today but for the poor old farmer it was
still a case of just getting by
In 1928 and 1929 which we think of as fairly prosperous years
comparatively speaking for city people farm ycuth were still being
told in Swisher county Go to school and get an education so you wont
have to farm
The agricultural areas of the Deep South were Impoverished and had
been since the Civil War until Franklin Roosevelt came along
Yet some of the biggest critics of any farm program are farmers
The big enes know what they are doing They can see the fulfillment
of their dreams should the farmers be given their freedom
The little ones are merely gullible They think the elimination of a farm
program would mean 19G2 prices and 1932 acreage They think they
ccud plant their entire farm In grain sorghum and get the same price
they g t last fall
About the last friend the farmer has about the last gap between him
and corporate farming Is a Secretary of Agriculture friendly to the
farmer a farm program designed by people who want to keep the farmer
in business Yet unapprociatlve farmers Join with antagonistic city
residents in calling the Secretary a dictator and other evil and unfair
names
We can think of nothing that would save a national administration
more headaches than washing Its hands of the farm problem The
farmer Isnt een a major force any more just frcm a political standpoint
Many farmers know the score They know when they are well off
They know that even today they never had It so good But they still
stand by Just like Pilate during the crucifixion of Christ They give assent
as people like Charlie Shuman tell Congress and the President that
all the farmer wants is to be left alone
Charlie Shuman should be sent to the penitentiary for sabotage
or attempted sabotage of the nations farmers
Those who follow him blindly need a few shock treatments
Who stands to gain anything from the administrations proposed farm
program except the farmers
