begin the search for 1961s Junior
Fat Stock Show Princesses The Agriculture
D partment of the LUBBOCK
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
will send out application blanks with
a letter this week urging maximum
participate
The annual Princess Ccntest a
highlight of the South Plains Junior
Fat Stock Show is to select a 411
Club representative and an FFA representative
who will bj awarded
complete western outfits and will
then serve as hostesses at the Fat
Stock Show
Each 4H Club and FFA Chapter
having an entry in th stock how
may enter a young lady as a contes
tant in the Prinatss Contest Th
final judging wll select tvo prinres

tion They will be on hand a a

the barbecue and to help promcte

Selection of the princesses will be

organization entering livestock in the
South Plains Junior Fat Stock Show
March 20 21 or 22 Other stipulations
of the contest are that girls
vinnng the Princess Contest will
not bi eligible to enter or show any
animal in the stock show and sale
they must be at least 14 years cf
age and they must agree to serve
as hostesses whenever required during
the stock show

The new Scil Testing Laboratory
being operated by the Extens on Service
in Lubbock is now chemically
processing soil samples to determine
the plant nutrients that the soil can
supply the crops to b3 grown in 1961
and 1962 Each sample is analyzed
for reaction pH organic matter
available phosphate available potash
available calcium and soluble
salts
It should be kept in mind that n t
rogen as such cannot be practically
determined by a soil test Nitrogen
j fertilizer recommendations are based
primarily on the amount of organic
matter th soil contains the crop

yields and the amount and kind of
nitrogen carrying fertilizers pre
i viously applied

avoid sampling in the fertilized
bands where phosphate and potash
