JOHN and Mary hear otner expressions which they don t
THEN One is the Republican hard money policy About
j i John and Mary know is that money is hard to get
Nine days after Eisenhower was inaugurated In 1953 his adminis
iaion took steps to institute a hard money policy They upped
re rest rates
But whit had this to do with John and Mary
Had John and Mary planned to buy a 10000 home in lift hut
i it off until I960 they will now pay an ADDITIONAL S200 in
I XTRA INTEREST on this 10 000 home
Or perhaps John and Mary in IW decide to trade In their old
> on a new model and the difference is 2000 They have it financed
r a 24month period This financing cost will be 10 per cent more

And this is not all
II Mary and John are an average family the fcpubllcan hard

for the hard money policy they would have JCO0 a year more

EUGENE GRESSMAN law clerk to the late Justice Trank Murphy
member of the U S Supreme Court has written an interesting

Justice Murphy was a Catholic
Gressman describes himself as a non Catholic born and breel in the

As a member of the highest court In the land Prank Murphy was

vote on certain issues directly affecting the Interests of American
jtholicism
Religiousoriented issues are far more the concern of Ihe Supreme

It is the Court that is the decisive interpreter of the Constitution
And it is the Court that must ultimately give definitive dimensions to
freedom of religion and to the wall of separation between church and

to the Catholic Church and to all other religious bodies Ihe

He had many contacts and friends among the hierarchy and he

More importantly I can testify that there was not the slightest

the promotion of Catholic dogmas
Time and again he took position which in the context of the

The Farmers Destiny Is In His Ballot
THL TARMLR S DI STISV IS IN HIS BAI LOT
We are now in the mids it aother great political campaign
the outcome of which I directly affect the lives
and destinies of farmers all over our nation Pirhaps no
segment of our population has so much at stake in this
election as our farm people The farmer and his family
must know that their very economic survival in agriculture
is deeply involved when they cast their ballots
Agriculture our basic industry has been brought to the
brink of bankruptcy under the rule of Ezra Taft Benson
and the Republican Administration The family farm that
basic clement of American free enterprise is seriously
threatened In seven years of EisenhowerNixonBcnion
rule we have witnessed the liquidation of 900000 farming
units Where are these once proud and independent farmers
today They have been forced to leave the land they
love and now walk the streets of our cities looking for
work or they are employed on menial jobs
Republican Promises
In the heat of the 1952 campaign candidate Eisenhower
promised to reward the farmer not at 90 per cent of
parity but at 100 per cent But let us consider the facts
Republican Performance
Farmers net income in 1959 dropped to the lowest level
in relation to the volume of their sales of any year since
the Department of Agriculture began keeping records In
terms of parity which is a measure of fair income for
farmc rs average farm prices at the close of 1939 reached
thtir lowest level for any yearend period since the depression
year of 1933
The farmer is gripped tighter than ever In the costprice
squu e that is strangling him In the first halt of 1960 his
net me was 8 per cent below the depressed level of 1950
I he per capita annual income of people living on farms
in 1959 Including government payments and also other
earnings from efffarm work again plummeted to less
than onehalf that of non farm people
Umparing 1980 with 1952 when the Republicans took
command we find the following facts
Farm prices down 17
Tarm parity ratio down 21
Realized net farm income down 24
Purchasing power of that farm income down 30
which is the lowest since 1940
farmers debts above 24 billion a record high
I Ins is the record in spite of the fact that there are
tOOOOO less farms today

the men i i pi I t n example of this antifarmcf
attiud s s i j i ritm made by Agriculture
Sccrttars Benson oi luni 4 195S when he speaking about
riferendims on farm programs said that it is a little bit
dangeroub to jive support to a program simply because
the people who art direciv interested in It favor it
Tobacco cotton and peanut producers in North Carolina
would be in sad shape indeed f they did not have their
production programs which have been overwhelmingly
voted into effect by the farmers themselves through referendumsElsenhower Veto of Constructive Programs
The Democratic Congress time and again during the
past eight years has earnestly attempted to enact legislation
to rescue the farmer from his dilemma But Eisenhower
through the use of his veto power time and again
blocked this legislation from becoming law He has used
his power of veto to build a barrier between the farmer
and his rightful reiourse to his government such as is
now accorded to labor and industry
A prosperous agriculture is important to the total
economy and to all the people The farm problem is every
bodys problem And yet under the leadership of a Republican
Secretary of Agriculture our urban friends have
ben persuaded to a position of prejudice against farmers
been persuaded to a position of prejudice against farmers
They are inclined to blame the farmer for the high cost of
food when the truth is that the farmers share of the
housewifes fcod dollar fell from 47 cents in 1952 to 33
cents in 1959 And the difference has gone not to the
housewife but to the middleman Yet the man who is supposed
to stand up for agriculture Secretary Benson has
done nothing to counteract this wrongful attitude of the
consumer Rather b > his policies and statements he has
actually encouraged it
Ind Divided Government Vote Democratic
It is vitally Important to our farm families therefore
that we have in Washington a Democratic administration
that will be devoted to the well being ef all our people
farmers included We must elect a Democratic President
so that both the Executive and Legislative branches of our
government can work to save our American farmers from
bankruptcy
A sound and realistic farm program has bem spelled

Parts Senate r Kennedy has enthusiastically endorsej this
program and mdt r hs able and dynamic leadership work
