SHOULD THE UNHAPPY day arrive when some American despot
is able to suspend the first 10 amendments to the U S Constitution
we wonder how many Americans would actually be affected
Of course everybody would do plenty of raving and ranting The
action would bo deplored in all circles but that Is beside the point
Wo are not wondering how many people would rave and rant rather
we are wondering how many Americans would actually bo affected
by the suspension of the first 10 amendments to the U S Constitution
usually called our bill of rights or our civil rights
COUHT8Y EDITOR
OR INSTANCE how many people would be affected if we
lost our freedom to worship9 Certainly the handful of worship
pers comparatively speaking who worship regularly and conscientious
ly would feel a loss But how many would that include
We have about 10000 persons residing in Swisher county According
to our estimates which are extremely liberal fewer than
3000 persons would be in church on any given Sunday We figured
the usual attendance on a day which Is neither too hot nor too cold
when the wind Isnt blowing and it isnt misting when it isnt vacation
or family reunion season then we added 300 so as not to underestimate
the attendance at any church And we find that less than one third
of Swisher county located in the heart of the Bible Belt where most
everybody tips his hat at the church would even know whether or not
the churches were still in business
Then we might deduct that number which can take church or leave
it those who attend out of habit or convention or because the wife Is
pretty hard to live with if she cant get the rest of the family to go
with her
We doubt seriously if more than a small minority of Americans
would feel a loss if freedom of worship was suspended
COUNTRY EDITOR
OW MANY AMERICANS would suffer should freedom of the
press be suspended How many papers would be affected if
they were prohibited from having an opinion Not many
Economic pressures have in too many instances stamped out freedom
of the press
Freedom of the Rress also includes the right of the reader to beard
to answer back How many readers exercise this right Not
many
COUNTRY EDITOR
JOW MANY AMERICANS would be affected if suffrage rights
were suspended Only a few Only a small minority of voters
vote in any election And the number of voters casting a ballot in all
elections is Infinitesimal If voting rights were given to only 25 percent
of those persons of voting age we doubt if many persons would
lose anything
Of course the personnel of those comprising that 25 per cent might
vary somewhat depending upon the Issue Involved in each election
but we probably wouldnt be affected as a nation if wc granted suffrage
to only one of each four adults
COUNTRr EDITOR
IS TO BE hoped that each reader will read Walter Rogers
IT column this week It deals with the moral decay of our nation He
paints a gloomy picture The po lnt t0 ° o noted Is that corruption in
high peaces Is bipartisan Neither major political party has a monopoly
on corruption and immorality

DOUBT If wc charged that the Farm Bureau on the national
level is even more loyal to the Republican party than is the
GOP National Committee FB supporters would charge us with everything
from facctlousncss to dishonesty
Try to figure this out if you can
In recent months oven the agricultural segment of the Republican
party has been highly critical of Ezra Benson True it has always been
the policy of the GOP to take care of its own farmers in traditional
Republican territory Iowa Nebraska and other rockribbed Republican
farm states Meanwhile it has known that farmers In Texas Oklahoma
and those In other traditional Democratic states are only fair
weather friends of the GOP and the GOP has never gone out of Its way
to court them
Members of the Republican National Commitee meeting in Chicago
last week suggested that Ezra Benson step down as secretary of agriculture
Senator Thruston B Morton of Kentucky was named to talk
frankly with Benson suggesting that he quit
COUNTRY EDITOR
THIS CHICAGO meeting was in progress American
WHILE Bureau Federation President Charles Shuman also In
Chicago was taking up for Benson and criticizing Senator Morton for
hS
Shuman backed up Benson saying the Republicans hud made a
whlonlnc boy of Benson
Shuman said he thought In rather bad taste the recent remark
of Senator Morton Republican national chairman who said some farm
belt national GOP commiteemen had mentioned Benson should resign
I think Shuman said that what Bensons critics really want Is
to divert the publics attention away from Some of tho policies they
proposed themselves that have not worked This is a poor time
have
to start talking about Ezra when ho is still In tho hospital recupcrat
