prove that Wied served in the army under

when questioned declined to say how
long he nad betn in tbe service, and ad
tnitied that he could not bring any one to
testify o his good character. On behalf
of Steele a number of troopers testified
that he alwavs treated them in a gen'lf-

tial trial of Lieutenant Steele today Pri-
vate Wild was recalled and repeated his
story fiergeant Comas, of the Fifteenth
Infantry, testified that he kuew Wild in
his company some years ago under the
nwrne of Daniel P. Ward. He said
Wild's reputation for ttuth w*s bad and
that he would not bel eve him under
oath, Seriieant Shaw of the eightn cav-
alry also questioned Wild's veracity and
s lid Lieutenant Steele's con' net had al-

of the eiuhth cavalry testified to tbesame

twentv-two witnesses to testify to Wild's
bad record and all the soldi rs of Lieu-
lenant Steele's company to testifv to the
