HEFS 251 The Family: A Systems Perspective (3-0-3), fall, spring.
A foundational study for understanding the dynamics of family and
marriage relationships from a systems (socioeconomic, cultural, and
psychological), wellness, and prevention of dysfunction perspective.
Topics covered represent areas of concern to families and to professionals
working with families: human relationships, family strengths, love, mate
selection, marriage, human sexuality, marriage success, and management
of resources.
HEFS 254 Administration/Supervision of Early Childhood
Programs (3-0-3), spring, odd years. Study of quality child care that
encompasses historical perspectives, program planning, personnel and
budget management, and working with parents and community
resources.
HEFS 256 Infant Development (3-0-3), spring, odd years.
Enhancing the psychomotor, social-emotional and cognitive-language
development of infants in their interaction with care givers, peers, and the
environment.
HEFS 451 Guidance in Early Childhood (2-2-3), fall, spring.
Fundamental principles underlying behavior and methods of working
with young children. Minimum of 30 hours Child Development Center
participation required. Prerequisite: HEFS 250; prerequisite waived for
non-Home Economics and Family Studies majors. Same as EACH 451.

HEFS 452 Parenting and Family Skills (3-0-3), spring. Principles of
effective parenting including interpersonal skills, communication, coping
strategies relative to various patterns of cultural and family life style, roles,
responsibilities, and support systems of the family and society; and
parent/child interactions through a life-span approach.
HEFS 453 The Family and Community (3-0-3), fall. Consideration
of institutions and resources in the community as they affect the wellbeing
of children and families. Experiences and information needed to
work effectively with these institutions and resources. Prerequisite: At
least three semester hours in courses related to family studies, or consent
of instructor.
HEFS 454 Aging and the Family (3-0-3),* spring, even years.
Problems of aging in the family as related to interpersonal relationships,
nutrition, and near environmental needs of the elderly in maintaining
personal independence. Five hours of field experience required in
nutrition module. Same as GERO 454.HEFS 457 Planning Environments for Children (3-0-3), spring,
even years. Planning for developmentally appropriate furnishings,
equipment, and programs in the home, day-care, and other environments
that promote the interrelated concepts of nutrition, health, and safety of
young children. Minimum of 16 hours of interaction in child care setting
required. Course fee: $25.
Vocational Home Economics Education
HEFS 366 Home Economics Occupations I (2-4-3), summer, even
years. Application of home economics knowledge and skills in careers
related to apparel and textiles, child care, and food service. Includes
observation and participation. Course completion is required for teaching
job-specific home economics. Course fee: $25.
HEFS 367 Home Economics Occupations I (2-4-3), summer, even
years. Application of home economics knowledge and skills in careers
related to home furnishings, individual and family health, and
institutional/home management. Includes observation and participation.
Course completion is required for teaching job-specific home economics.
HEFS 470 Home Economics Curriculum and Media (3-0-3),
spring. Organization and implementation of vocational home economics
programs. Emphasis on goals, methods, resource materials, and
evaluation as applied to home economics content areas; 25 hours of
observation/aide work in home economics classroom required.
Prerequisites: Junior standing, TASP, and admission to teacher education
program.
HEFS 471 Management and Methods of Instruction in Home
Economics (3-0-3), fall. Equips students with knowledge and skills
needed to: teach in middle school, junior high school, senior high school,
and in adult home economics education programs; manage a home
economics department; and assume other school and community
responsibilities. Requires 20 hours aide work with teacher under whom
student will be student teaching. Prerequisites: Senior standing; HEFS
470.
HEFS 472 Student Teaching in Home Economics (1-15-6). A
minimum of 240 clock hours directed teaching, observation, and related
activities in an all-day teaching situation. Prerequisites: Senior standing;
HEFS 470, 471; overall GPA of 2.5.
