74 Health and Physical Education
blood chemistry, respiratory function, muscular strength, or
flexibility can be obtained. Computer assisted nutrition and
stress profiles and personal evaluations are also available
through the Human Performance Laboratory.
Students selecting Health and Physical Education as their
course of study will be preparing to teach, coach, become
involved in community health programs, or work in health
and wellness in the corporate or private setting. The nature
of these occupations requires professionals who are
interested in people.
Many courses have been approved with all three prefixesHED,
PE and PECE If a specific prefix is needed by a
student (other than the one listed), consult the Department
Chair.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This is a non-teaching degree; the teaching degree is listed
as Exercise and Sport Science.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.

Degree Core requirements) for the BS are listed on p. 20.

Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BS in Physical
Education (non-teaching) are as follows:
1. Physical Education, 15 hrs.: PE 110, 121, 122, 232,
241, 244, 245, and PE 333. (PE 121, 122, 244, and
245 satisfy the General Education PE requirement.)
2. Health, 9 hrs., chosen from the following: HED 111,
324, 405, and 410.
3. Physical Education, 15 hrs., chosen from the
following: PE 361, 362, 442, 470, 471, 476, 490,
391, and 498.
4. Supplement for the major, 12 hrs., chosen from the
following:
6 hrs from BIBM 312, 390, 434, 435, or 437
3 hrs from SOCI 222, 342, or 350
3 hrs from PSYC 232, 278, or 342
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, a student must take
from 18 to 24 hours of general electives, arranged to
ensure 33 semester hours of advanced work. Electives may
include deficiency requirements in science and foreign

COMMUNITY HEALTH
Community Health involves working with people in a
public setting.
Career opportunities include all health agencies at the local,
state, and national levels. Volunteer agencies also hire community
health majors. Potential employment is available
with various medical-related facilities. Most opportunities
will require an advanced degree for career advancement.

Required courses outside the department, 24 hrs.:
COMS 108, PHYS 102, SOCI 222, COMS 384,
HEFS 221, GERO 348, and PSYC 370.4. Psychology, 6 hrs.: chosen from PSYC 278, 386, and
392.
5. Sociology, 6 hrs.: chosen from SOCI 342, 380;
SOCW 230 and 443.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student majoring
in Community Health may take 11 hours of general
electives, arranged to ensure 33 semester hours of advanced
work. Electives may include deficiency requirements in
science and foreign language.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN
CORPORATE FITNESS
This track is interdisciplinary by design with required
courses, electives, and laboratory experiences to prepare the
students for graduate studies in corporate fitness, exercise
physiology, or cardiac rehabilitation.
