68 Foreign Languages
Students interested in teaching French, German or Spanish
at the secondary school level may choose either a BA in
one of these languages with the addition of teacher
certification or a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies. The latter
requires two teaching fields. Please see the Department of
Education section in the catalog for teacher certification
requirements and the BS in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements (University Core and
Degree Core requirements) for the BA are listed on p. 20.
Language majors should choose HIST 117, 118.
Departmental Requirements
If you have had two or more years of a foreign language in
high school, you should be able to earn college credit by
examination. You should take the CLEP subject
examination in French, German, or Spanish during your
senior year of high school. If this is impossible, the test can
be arranged through ACU.
If a student has little language background or fails to earn
sufficient advanced placement by examination, he or she
may have to take up to 12 hours of elementary and
intermediate work as elective hours.
Abilene Christian University offers a cooperative program
in Spanish with Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry
University. Students planning to major in Spanish may
take advanced work in Spanish language or literature at
either HSU or McMurry.
Departmental requirements for the BA in French, German,
or Spanish are as follows:
1. Principal language courses, 24 hrs.: FLFR, FLGE, or
FLSP, advanced-level courses at ACU or in approved
programs of Study Abroad.
2. Supporting language(s): Intermediate proficiency in a
second foreign language (FL_ 221 and 222, or
equivalent; or elementary proficiency (FL_ 111 and

language of one's major.
3. A minimum GPA of 2.25 for courses in major.
General Electives
To obtain the 128 credit hours required for graduation, the
student majoring in a foreign language will need to take 27
elective hours, arranged to ensure a total of 33 hours of
advanced work. Electives may include deficiency requirements
in science and foreign language.
Minor in Foreign Language
A minor in French, German, or Spanish may be added to
other degrees. A foreign language minor requires 18 hours
as follows:1. Elementary proficiency in French, German or
Spanish.
2. Intermediate language courses, 6 hrs (FL- 221,
222, or equivalent).
3. Advanced-level language courses, 12 hrs.: FLFR,
