16 Academic Information
Inter-College Enrollment
Students enrolled at Abilene Christian University may also
enroll for courses at either Hardin-Simmons University or
McMurry University. Likewise, students enrolled at
Hardin-Simmons or McMurry may concurrently enroll for
courses at ACU without going through the regular
admission process. Students from Hardin-Simmons or
McMurry who are not at the same time taking courses in
their own school should apply for nondegree admission to
ACU. Intercollegiate enrollment forms can be secured in
the Registrar's Office.
When a required course cannot be taken at ACU in a
sequence that would permit timely graduation, ACU
students should first apply in the Registrar's office to take
the course within the Abilene University Consortium,
which includes Abilene Christian University, HardinSimmons
University, and McMurry University.
Courses taken by ACU students through intercollege
enrollment count toward degree requirements provided
approval has been secured in advance. It is the student's
responsibility to make certain that courses taken through
the arrangement will satisfy their individual degree
requirements. Course work in a given major must be
approved on an inter-college enrollment form by the
academic adviser and the ACU department chairman. In
such areas as ROTC, where ACU has no department, the
intercollege enrollment form should be approved by the
ACU Registrar.
Concurrent Enrollment Policy
ACU students are generally expected to take their courses
at ACU. Only in exceptional circumstances, approved in
advance in writing, may ACU students receive credit for
courses, including correspondence courses, taken
concurrently. If the course is not available within the
Abilene University Consortium, students may then
complete a Transfer Course Application to take the course
at another accredited institution. Transfer Course
Applications are available in the Registrar's office and
require the approval of the chairman of the ACU
department which normally offers the course. Grades for
transfer courses outside the Abilene University Consortium
are not included in the student's GPA at ACU.
By government regulations, only those courses from the
Abilene University Consortium and Abilene Intercollegiate
School of Nursing can be accepted for financial aid
eligibility. Courses from other colleges or universities will
not count as hours enrolled for financial aid eligibility.
Transfer and Post-Admission Transfer Credit
All course work from any institution, completed prior to
enrollment at ACU, will be evaluated according to the
policy published in the ACU catalog for evaluation of
transfer courses (see Transfer Admission) or according to a
specific transfer articulation agreement with the prior
institution.Transfer Course Application
An ACU student may receive credit for courses taken
concurrently or during a summer term at another
university or college, subject to the following restrictions:
1. If an ACU student intends to take a required course
at another institution, he must first obtain written
permission on a Transfer Course Application form
from the chairman of the ACU department which
normally offers the course. This restriction does not
apply to general electives.
2. After being classified as a junior, a student may take
no more than six hours at a junior college.
3. After enrolling at ACU, students may take no more
than one general education (University or Degree
core) required course in English or history at another
institution. Due to the special nature of the science
core curriculum courses (PHYS 120, BIOL 120,
AENV or ITEC 130) and mathematics core
curriculum course (Math 120), students may not find
an equivalent course at another institution. Students
who have been approved to take a mathematics
course at another institution will be required to take a
departmental examination before the transfer course
is accepted.
4. A Transfer Course Application must be completed for
transfer courses to meet degree requirements.
5. Credit hours transferred toward a degree in art shall
not exceed one half of the credit hours within the
major. A minimum of 24 of the total advanced hours
in studio areas required for the BFA must be done at
ACU.
6. A student not in a cooperative degree program must
earn his last 24 hours in residence at ACU before
graduation. He or she must also earn in residence a
minimum of 24 semester hours of upper division
work including 9 hours in his major.
7. Evaluation of transfer work intended to meet specific
ACU degree requirements is the responsibility of
department chairmen.
How transfer credit is applied toward an ACU
undergraduate degree depends on an evaluation of each
course to determine its equivalence in content and
semester-hour credit to a corresponding ACU course.
When no course of equivalence is found, the course is
counted as elective. A course which carries more credit
than the corresponding ACU course is counted as
equivalent to the ACU course, and the additional hours are
counted as elective credit.
Certain courses or blocks of courses at ACU are followed
by proficiency or exit tests. Students who take these
courses at other schools will be expected to pass the
required tests when they return to ACU.
