In those programs where a thesis is presented, the comprehensive examination
will be in the form of an oral examination over the thesis and such examination over
the major field as is required by the department concerned. The examining committee
over a thesis will be composed of the three members of the thesis committee and two
additional members selected by the thesis committee chairman and the Graduate
Dean.
5. APPLICATION FOR THE DEGREE
The candidate must make written application for the degree in the Graduate
Office not later than eight weeks prior to graduation in a long session and not later
than five weeks prior to graduation in a Summer session.
A student will not be permitted to graduate in the same semester in which the
candidacy application is submitted.
6. APPEALS
Petitions for exceptions to the stated requirements, due to extenuating circumstances,
may be submitted to the Graduate Office for approval by the departmental
advisor, the Graduate Dean, and the Graduate Council.
Student Life
The aim of the University is to establish within the students high standards of
conduct, individual responsibility, and the worth and dignity of the individual. All
aspects of student life are under the supervision of Garvin Beauchamp, Vice President
for Student Services. Information about housing, student regulations, or any aspect of
student life may be obtained by writing to the Student Services Office, ACU Station,
Box 8036, Abilene, Texas 79699.
The student handbook, which is available from the Student Services Office,
details all regulations concerning student activity. Listed below are some of the
regulations as they relate to behavior on the campus, in classrooms, and in universitycontrolled
housing, as well as some general university policies:
1. Smoking is not permitted on campus, in classrooms, or in dormitory rooms,
and is strongly discouraged for all students.
2. Illegal use of drugs or the drinking of beverage alcohol is considered a
suspension offense.
3. Profanity in all forms is prohibited.
4. Firearms or explosives of any nature are not permitted.
5. The University neither sponsors nor approves dances for students or student
organizations.
6. Students must observe the dress and grooming code.
7. Attendance records are kept in all classes, and students may be dropped from
classes for excessive absences.
8. All dormitory residents must purchase a cafeteria meal ticket.
9. All accounts must be taken care of in a satisfactory manner before finals are
taken.
10. All student automobiles used on campus must be registered with the traffic
and security officer.
11. Students taking part in athletic and other such activities do so at their own
risk. The University is responsible only insofar as an accident or sickness is
due to University negligence.
