Department Head
Teacher education at Abilene Christian College
has long been considered a significant part
of the College. When senior-college status was
attained in 1919 under President Sewell, the
College was preparing teachers. In 1932 when
President Cox assumed that office, teacher education
received another impetus. In 1934 when
Dr. G. C. Morlan became head of the Department
of Education, teacher education was more fully
encouraged. Dr. Orval Filbeck became department
head in 1958 and led the department until
June of 1974 when Dr. Chantrey A. Fritts received
the appointment.
The primary function of the Department of
Education is to assist in the professional preparation
of students who are competent to teach in
the elementary and secondary schools. A capable
faculty provides professional education that
comes from rich backgrounds of public school
and professional leadership.
To encourage professional development of
teachers, the Department sponsors two professional
organizations for prospective teachers.
The James F. Cox Chapter of the Student Education
Association was named in honor of a former
president and is affiliated with both state
and national teacher organizations. It is designed
to develop professional participation and
leadership. Its membership is the largest of any
professional group on the campus. An active
chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, National HonorSociety in Education, is available to juniors and
seniors of high scholastic standing who are preparing
for positions in the field of education.
The Bachelor of Science in Education degree
is awarded to those who meet the requirements
with concentrations in: elementary education,
art, biology, business, chemistry, drama, English,
French, German, history, home economics, industrial
education, mathematics, music, physical
education, physics, social science, Spanish, speech,
and speech and hearing therapy. Endorsements
are also possible in mental retardation, early
childhood and driver education. A joint program
with Hardin-Simmons University leads to endorsement
in language and learning disabilities.
Students preparing to teach in the elementary
school are under the supervision of the Department
of Education. Those preparing to teach in
the secondary school are under the joint direction
of the department of the major area of
concentration and the Department of Education.
Since all required education courses are taken
in the junior and senior years, those who complete
programs at ACC must take the courses in
residence at the College, except with prior approval
by the Department of Education.
your future
in education
Approximately 50 percent of all ACC graduates
can be recommended for teacher certification
in Texas. Included in this number are
persons of the highest academic ability. Becoming
a teacher is a respected goal at the
College.
Abilene Christian College students who are
preparing to teach have gained recognition
through the years. Many have won honors and
achieved leadership in their professional organizations
at the state level.
Teachers prepared at Abilene Christian are
serving around the world. School systems from
New York to California have sent representatives
to the campus to recruit teachers and the College's
Placement Office actively assists graduates
to get most suitably placed.67
