Courses of Instruction
Clothing
310-Textile.
A study of textile materials, their structure, coloring, finish,
selection, care, and indentification of textile fabrics. Laboratory
and lecture six hours per week. Parallel or Prerequisite, Chemistry
311 and 312.
324-Costume Design.
A study of period costume for the purpose of serving as an inspiration
for creating modern costumes. This course also
includes a study of principles of design, color, personality in
the selection and designing of costumes in relation to the
individual and to the occasion. Laboratory four hours per week,
lecture and recitation one hour. Prerequisite, Art 320.
325-Principles of Dressmaking
This constitutes a course in selection, care, hygiene and
construction of clothing with emphasis on design, color, and
material for the individual; made-over problems; personal
hygiene, grooming. Laboratory and lecture six hours per
week. Prerequisite: Clothing 310. Parallel or prerequisite,
Art. 320.
326-Dressmaking-Continuation of 325
For those who have had 325, two or more years of high
school clothing, or the approval of the instructor. A study
of the essential principles of dressmaking is made with emphasis
on fitting the fabric to the figure, planning the clothing
for the family. Laboratory and lecture six hours per week.
Prerequisite: Clothing 310.
330-Weaving and Handwork.
This course includes a study of the development of hand
crafts such as weaving, knitting, embroidering, needlepoint,
crochet. Practical work in weaving on the hand loom, the
dyeing of yarns for weaving, knitting, and the making of hooked
rugs are some of the problems during the semester. Open
to all the students. Lecture and laboratory 6 hours per week.
352-Clothing for Children.
This course considers infants' and children's clothing from the
standpoint of health, economy, and appropriateness. Various
types of garments for children up to twelve years of age are
made. Laboratory and lecture six hours per week. Prerequisite:
Clothing 321.
353-Clothing. Pattern Making.
Emphasis is placed on the principles of pattern construction,
developing the foundation pattern, and draping in cloth, on
dress forms. Technique is developed in creative designing and
the construction of such problems as suits, coats, formal and
informal evening dresses, and evening wraps. Lecture and
laboratory six hours per week. Prerequisite: Clothing 324
and 326.61
