course is a survey of English literature from the eighteenth century
to Tennyson. An original essay is required.
323.-English Literature. A continuation of English 322, covering
the period from Tennyson to the present. An original essay is required.351.-American Literature. A survey of American literature from
the beginning to the present. The best productions of prose and
poetry are carefully analyzed. Original essays are required. All
students who major in English must study this course.
352.-American Literature. English 351 is a prerequisite to this
course. It deals with Thoreau, Lowell, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson,
Mark Twain, and many other novelists, poets, and short story writers
of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
355.-Children's Literature. In this course, the materials and
methods of teaching language and literature in the elementary grades
are considered. Much collateral reading is required.
371.-Early English Drama. A study of the development of the
drama in England. A rapid reading of the representative earlier
plays and a more detailed study of the work of the predecessors
and contemporaries of Shakespeare.
372.-Shakespeare. A study of the Shakespearean Drama with an
analysis of the style and methods of the great poet. Shakespeare's
earlier plays are studied intensively. Themes and library research
are required.
373.-Shakespeare. A continuation of English 372. The later
plays are studied with emphasis on the great tragedies. Prerequisite:
English 372.
381.-Milton. John Milton, the sublime Puritan poet, is not dry
and difficult as some have been led to think. When properly approached
and studied, he is highly interesting. Very few students,
when correctly guided, fail to enjoy his mighty blank verse, majestic
imagery, and lofty faith in virtue and the triumph of right. A
course in Milton is similar to one in the Bible, and his robust faith
