CORRESPONDENCE STUDY
THE FUNCTION OF THE CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL
By means of the correspondence study service t'e College
is taken to the student. Regular courses of College rank are prepared
by members of the College faculty, who exercise the same care in
teaching them as in teaching residence work.
Abilene Christian College gives this work because it realizes
that its service must reach out beyond those who are able to profit
by its class room instruction. So it is glad to extend a helping hand
by carrying its courses to those who are unable to take advantage of
the work offered in residence. The College is ever desirous of rendering
Christian services and feels that these ideals can best be realized
by reaching out wherever it is possible to make its influence felt.
THIS METHOD HAS A SUCCESS
Teaching by correspondence is no longer an experiment. In
struction by mail has been given a thorough trial and has proved a
success. Twenty years ago only a few of the institutions of higher
learning were attempting to carry on work of this nature. The situation
has changed to such an extent that at present thousands of students
are pursuing correspondence study courses. Many of the most
eminent colleges have more students enrolled in non-resident work
than they have in daily residence attendance. An ever increasing
number of men and women are availing themselves of the opportunity
thus offered to secure an education.
VALUE
While the non-resident student loses the stimulus of class
discussion he gains other advantages peculiar to this type of study.
He is placed upon his own responsibility, and thus develops initiative
and perseverance to an unusual degree. As ne continues to master
the assignments he gains in confidence and learns to rely upon his
own ingenuity to overcome difficulties. Tne habits of thoroughness
and direct methods of attack which he develops will stand him in
good stead in later life.
Correspondence study makes it possible for individuals to
secure thorough courses of training at the least possible cost and to
gain this training while earning a living. It offers a practical and
sane method for many to continue their education who are not able
to do all of their work in residence and those who take advantage of
this opportunity are able to reduce the time necessary to secure a
degree.
FOR WHOM GIVEN
There is scarcely a man or woman who may not profit by
correspondence work. It is especially recommended to the following
classes:
1. Persons who are working for a living but who wis'a, while they
work, to secure additional traiinig.
